About the Author
Dr. James (Jim) Burson, creator of Solution-Based Basketball®, is known as a "coach's coach" (Sports Illustrated) for his lifetime commitment to the game. He is a consultant to basketball coaches and to sports companies, a popular motivational speaker, former president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a member of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. He taught and coached for over 40 years at the university level and is the author of The Daily Nugget: Motivations for Basketball Coaches and Everyone Who Loves the Game.

Basketball mom says "winning coaching"

It is clear that Jim Burson knows a great deal about basketball and about motivating people. My son played high school basketball while I read this book and the book helped me to be a more understanding parent. I think I gained empathy for the complex plight of a coach as well as players, and I certainly saw myself in some of the mothers the author describes throughout the story. It helped me to realize that every coach is on a journey of their own and that, while I may want them to be perfectly together for my son, we all are learning as we go. The Golden Whistle made me want to be a better mother, not just a better basketball mom. For me, that felt like winning coaching.

The education of the heart is the heart of education

I have spent a coaching lifetime in southern Ohio and have grown professionally watching Coach Burson's Muskingum College teams, listening to him at coaching clinics, observing his practices and seeking his counsel for over 40 years. I anxiously awaited the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. Dr. Burson's story, uniquely written, presents deep questions of beginning and experienced coaches alike in the formation of core values that will maximize a coach's influence on student-athletes. However, this book cuts to the heart issues of a coach, challenges him to see and do the right things for the right reasons, and grow personally as well as professionally from the experience of truly pursuing excellence. In a "style over substance" culture, this book has weighty subject matter for thought and reflection. I always recommend three "must read" books to basketball coaches serious about the profession: "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, "A Season With Dick Bennett" by Eric Ferris, and "The Score Takes Care of Itself" by Bill Walsh. This book must be added to the list. "The Golden Whistle" is a gift to the coaching profession.

Deeper than you might expect, more than just basketball.

I'm not a book reader, mostly because I don't have time, so any book I read has to have at least one takeaway thought that sticks with me for a while and goes beyond what I would have expected from the book. This book certainly has it from first-time author Jim Burson. If you are a Basketball coach - I think it's a must read. If you a sports coach - it's a must read. But I think if you look past the fact this has a basketball/sports theme, this book has some great nuggets that will make you think about the way that you prepare to teach and to be taught throughout life.
The book is based on fictional characters and tells the story of basketball knowledge being passed from a legendary coach entering retirement to his successor, a bright young apprentice who has encountered struggles early in his career. I suspect many of the experiences, characters, and lessons are based on real people or knowledge from the Author. The set up was well done and the story moves efficiently into the heart and purpose of the book. There are a number of great takeaways that I will leave for the reader, but by far the theme that stuck with me as I finished the book was how to prepare your own life so that you can always be ready to accept knowledge from others, adapt it so that it becomes your own unique knowledge, and then share it to others when they are ready to be coached. There is an emphasis in the story about creating your own unique plan by using the knowledge of others, and those that do this effectively will experience the greatest success in life.
This may sound a bit deep for a book about basketball, but I suspect the message was not designed to be limited to the game. Of course, there are a number of great, basketball specific philosophical coaching ideas to chew on, and so the book is worth the read to get at those nuggets. But by far the highest level takeaway goes beyond the game and brings the reader to a satisfying end that transcends basketball.
For a first-time author, Dr. Burson did an amazing job. There were a few times in the book that became too basketball specific, but those were easily skimmed to get back to the theme that grabbed my focus. For the price, reading efficiency, and for providing that takeaway value you want from any book, this delivers.
