cookbook collector must have

l collect cookbooks but for some reason I didn't have this one & yet it's apparently a revered best selling cookbook. Now I have it in my collection. After perusing the recipes I can see why it's so popular. Anyone who orders this cookbook will be delighted because of how easy it is to follow the recipe directions. l highly recommend this cookbook, the older original book like I ordered or the new revised versions on the market today.

Old school cookbook

Contains over 400 recipes. This is my go-to cookbook. I love it because I can read several recipes and choose ingredients from among them. Example, the sweet potatoes, I don't add milk or orange juice, nor salt or butter, but do add nutmeg, allspice,
cinnamon and candied ginger plus vanilla and Stroh rum for the moisture. My family loves it.

Excellent procedure to introduce complex transient phenomena

Teaching the dynamics and transients in electric machines for the Msc students is not easy. Analysis becomes more complex by introducing converters and control. What i found excellent in this book is in introducing many projects of simulation by matlab /simulink at the end of every chapter, which is very helpful for professors and for students to understand the dynamics of DC and AC electric machines. The author introduce also very well AC and DC speed drives. Another excellent point is that we got the Matlab/Simulink projects on a CD with the book and we can use it in workshop for our students.

Serious challenger to the best book on my shelf

Learning for the first time how an electrical machine works is newer easy, but how hard it is, depends a lot on the form of teaching. Professor Dr. Chi-Mun Ong has done an exelent work on how firstly to model the basic electrical machines (DC-motor, induction motor and synchronous motor) and secondly how to model the motors in a dynamic system. He describes the method of dq0-transformation of currents, voltages etc. in a nice understandable way and uses one of the best tools for constructing and solving coupled dynamic systems. The tool is ofcourse Matlab/simulink. Matlab/simulink is needed to be able to run the examples from the CDROM, but is not needed to understand the text.
I myself might disagree to a degree on how the differential equations themself are solved and I do not like that he uses a base for the angular speed.
There are unfortunately some some errors in the development of the model for the induction motor (i have not checked for the synchronous motor), but they are obvious if the text is used as a base to develop your model.
This is, I must say, nevertheless a very good book

New emotions for a familiar story

This book is great. It's going to be my 2nd time reading through it. I felt some new emotions while reading this 9th Century reimagining of the gospel story. I kind of chuckled for a minute when I read that the woman who asks Peter if he knew Jesus after he was arrested ... is described as unattractive. Another great part that is different and that I really enjoyed was when Peter cuts off the ear of one of the soldiers sent to arrest Jesus. It was described as a full force strike to the side of the head -- leaving a mortal wound. Before the attack, Peter's emotion of being enraged is also described well.
So as other reviewers have said, it is a poetic work aimed at conveying the gospel message to a warrior culture. There's also a theme of being without doubt in Jesus as "Chieftain." The scenes with John the Baptist are also great. Like I said, I felt new emotions for this familiar story. The important messages are clearly conveyed however, so the added stuff is kind of seen with the understanding that it was meant to add the extra pazazz -- much like how they do in the movies. And it's a great read that I recommend to all. 5 stars.

The All-Wielder's Peace-Bairn

Father Murphy's translation of a complicated work is superlative. Before I say anything else I must say that his presentation of the Christian Gospel outreach to the Saxons is easy to read, with useful footnotes, and a natural flowing translation. Father Murphy treats this effort of Christian evangelism with a great deal of love.

(I have collegiate level training in history, linguistics, and English so I should probably throw a little bit more detail into my review)
The Heliand is the first major attempt to reach the 9th century Germanic Saxons in their own cultural terms. Father Murphy had quite the challenge: to incorporate meanings from the popular Latin harmony of the Gospels paraphrased into Old Saxon culture and language while then translating both of those items into contemporary American English. As a history nerd, a linguist, and a church history student, I was so impressed by Murphy's work that I had to thank him personally.
Hardcore medievalists may take issue with various minutia of Murphy's choices, but I think we history nerds tend to fall in love with our first impressions and translations of ancient works. Murphy's translation is to be commended for communicating feeling behind word choice in several places when a more wooden transliteration could have sufficed. For non-linguists, that means that Murphy's translation is going to be more emotionally real and present than more technically-obsessed authors.
I highly recommend it for any undergraduate student or layman.
Anyone who would nitpick this work is probably at the level of reading it in the original anyway, and should go do that. I have seen more mechanical translations of the work, but it takes a good German scholar and a clergyman both to really present the heart of the material.

The Gospels in a mirror

My husband is an artist and to check his painting, he looks at it in a mirror because he can see problems that are invisible when you look at it the regular way. I found the Heliand to be like that.

My original aim was to see how distorted the message was to the Saxons. It is distorted, but I found it to be extremely powerful for that very reason. It makes you think. When Mary wraps the infant in clothes and precious jewels, it makes you stop short. It couldn't have been like that. But it should have been; Jesus was that precious. I loved the poetic images like the meadows of heaven. And there is great joy and feeling in the telling that are pretty well missing from the traditional gospels. This is a story told by a master storyteller.

We are almost as far removed from the warrior society of the Saxons as we are from the even more distant world of Jesus. Reading the story transposed from one culture to another makes you look at the changes and think about what is important and what is just details. Like looking at your painting through a mirror.

Patti Berg does it again!

Another entertaining book! As someone else pointed out, Juliet does accomplish a lot in a short period of time. I couldn't do all that in a month. However, the mix of her and Cole was great. Unlike some books I've read the kids don't steal the stage. Cole's desire to hang onto the kids and Juliet's desire to help him is touching. And their desire for each other is hot! And I loved revisiting the characters from "Stuck On You"!

Not Her Best

I know others have loved this book so these remarks are definitely my own opinion. I gave 3 stars because of the flow of the words and the sparkly dialogue. But I had problems staying with the story.

My first problem is with the disguise thing. It was OK if you go for the hooker look My big complaint is the constant bubble gum. It drove me crazy very quickly. It wasn't needed and got in the way of the story. It was like hearing someone use the word "basically" to begin every sentence. Arrgh!

Next, I have a definite problem with h/h meeting and falling into bed shortly. Only to call it for real and everlasting love. 1 1/2 days before sex is pretty much shortly. Lust I can believe in. Not true love.

Editing is sloppy. When Cole's hippie parents arrive, we are told that Joplin re-named herself after her favorite OD'd rock star, Janice. This was corrected to Janis on the next page and not repeated. Then, more toward the end, the twins are mentioned. Huh? I believe the "twins" were triplets. Stuff like that just jerks me right out of any story. No excuse for it. What else do editors have to do but edit?

The whole story takes place in too short a time frame for all that Juliet/Autumn accomplishes. Tending bar at night, nanny to 5 small girls by day. 3 in diapers. And solving everybody's problems while she's at it. Painting Joe's Gas and Bait Shop in her spare time. Having hot sex with Cole whenever. All this in 3-4 days and without breaking a nail or chipping her pink polish. As far as I could tell, she only slept one night in the whole book. Wish I could do that.

I enjoyed the crazy villaness. She was pretty obsessive. Sort of reminded me of Ursula the sea witch in "The Little Mermaid". But she gets a nice comeuppance at the end.

I know there was at least 1 previous book set in Plentiful, Wyoming. I haven't read it. It doesn't really matter as this book stands alone. Even though characters from the previous book are here. And they are characters. Which is as it should be in a small town. Characters help the story move along.

A lot of stuff happens in this book. Too much, I think. The malpractice thing could have been left on the editing floor. It didn't really advance the plot.

I'm glad I read the book but it won't be going on my keeper shelf. But I will read future Berg books.

Good for a relaxing read but be prepared to be overwhelmed

Patti Berg's second book on the town of Plentiful, Wyoming is good for light reading and it is quite enjoyable. I agree with some other reviewers who said she crammed quite a lot of information in this one book and everything seems to have happened within a few days.

There are quite a number of things that are underdeveloped and on hindsight, the book feels like Patti Berg had thrown everything AND the kitchen sink into the story and strung together the ones that stuck.

Juliet, for example, is a former B-grade actress and famous for 7 slasher movies, had the heroine of software game Amazonia modelled after her, is a famous mystery novelist, and can work as a bartender, as well as repaint a gas station and be a nanny to five girls including a set of triplets, after the previous 14 nannies quit. She was also estranged from her dad and could not make amends in time before he died, her tycoon of an ex-husband is in jail for embezzlement and her assistant has been betraying her for years.

Cole, the hero, is a vet, who was brought up by hippie parents and whose sister died leaving five orphaned girls. He is being sued for malpractice after a mare died giving birth to a foal. His parents, who were in Tibet and did not bother to come back when his sister died, want custody of the girls, and his father is currently in his 17th month of keeping silent, part of a five-year pledge not to talk.

I hope you get what I mean when I say she has crammed a lot of details and character developments, mostly unnecessary, in this book. Those things aside, like I said earlier, this is an enjoyable read. I recommend renting or borrowing the book instead of buying it.

RICHARD CAMPBELL, director of the journalism program at Miami University, is the author of “60 Minutes” and the News: A Mythology for Middle America (1991) and coauthor of Cracked Coverage: Television News, the Anti-Cocaine Crusade and the Reagan Legacy (1994). Campbell has written for numerous publications including Columbia Journalism Review, Journal of Communication, and Media Studies Journal and he has served on the editorial boards of Critical Studies in Mass Communication and Television Quarterly. As a writer and media critic, he is a frequent speaker on public radio and television. CHRISTOPHER R. MARTIN is a professor of journalism at University of Northern Iowa and author of Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media (2003). He has written articles and reviews on journalism, televised sports, the Internet, and labor for several publications, including Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Labor Studies Journal, and Culture, Sport, and Society. A highly useful textbook

This was required for a journalism class I took in college called "media and society." The topics and examples were very informative and intriguing. The pormat was easy to follow, provided information.ation through photos, keywords, and real-lofe examples of an event that pertained to the topic. I have kept it for references regarding the media, and historical events and progress. I love the things I have learned from this textbook

I bought this for class and it was very cheap on Amazon! Sold it to my bookstore on campus at the end of the semester and I actually made a profit. Item as described, shipped on time. Shipped very nicely in a sturdy box! Thank you! Sturdiness was excellent as there was no way the book would be damaged. Nicely done.

easy to read, very detailed chapters

I ordered this book for a Master's class I'm taking but turns out it was the wrong book. I kept it thinking I could use it for a reference later on. Another class requires a project on a specific medium, and this book lists nearly all of them with so much information about each. Things work out sometimes! :)
