A Solid Elizabethan Mystery

I am a big fan of Tudor and Elizabethan novels - the struggles of the period and the people are fascinating. CJ Sansom is one of favourite authors. I discovered Rory Clements somewhat by accident while waiting for the next Shardlake story and have been quite taken with his work. I really enjoyed his first two novels (Martyr and Revenge) and couldn't wait for The Prince to be available on Kindle. Like the other two books, The Prince is introducing me to a whole new (archaic?) English! The history, the people, the events are historically accurate and I am enjoying using this is a launch to learning more of the history of the period! Much like Matthew Shardlake in the CJ Sansom books, John Shakespeare is character that easily believable and highly likable. He struggles with the human condition and the search for truth - something we can all relate to even today. Keep them coming Mr. Clements!

Sharp detail, good context - the Shakespeare you didn't learn about at school.

Of course, I know that John Shakespeare is a fictional creation: elder brother of the Bard of Avon. That's one of the delightful conceits of Rory Clements' work. But there are plenty inside these pages who were most certainly not fiction, starting with John Shakespeare's nemesis, Topclifffe, along with the Cecils, Burghleys and Walsinghams who appear through the series. The historical detail is excellent, giving the reader a real sense of time and place - and of the issues on which the Elizabethan court turned.
John Shakespeare as a character is well-balanced, with some interesting personal dynamics, related to the alleged Catholicism of his family - and of his wife, Catherine. At the time, as you may know, Catholics were seen as the traitors lurking within the breast of Gloriana's England. Plenty of cut-and-thrust along the way, too - dare I say that if you enjoyed Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels, Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, or even Hilary Mantel's stunning Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Dead 2-out-3 about Thomas Cromwell, you may well take pleasure from Rory Clements' pen.
If I have one small quibble, it's a technical one. In structuring his plots, Clements rightly leads us off down various different paths - starting all sorts of different hares, as a good thriller writer should. However, by the time of the denouement, several of the hares are still running crazily around and Clements has to do quite a bit of messy - at least to my mind - tidying up. Well, life can ben messy and I'm sure it was doubly so in in the 1590s. It's a good entertaining read, so I'm happy to forgive him a slightly frayed end.

A Rather Dreary Novel

Christopher Marlowe is stabbed to death. It is ruled an act of self defense but John Shakespeare, the brother of William, suspects murder. But why? Before he can delve deeply into that, he is tasked with uncovering the anarchists who are blowing up areas of London with casks of gun powder. Then too, he must tackle another growing development that may throw the entire monarchy and England into chaos.
There is much to learn about Elizabethan England from this book. The facts of Christopher Marlowe's death are accurate and the supposition for his death put forth in this fictional book are not much different from actual and varied theories. One can certainly get a glimpse into what life may have been like in those times, the foods, habitats, attitutes of the people to conditions in England, etc.
The plot lines just seemed to go all over the place. It was hard to tell who was a friend and ally to John Shakespeare. People seemed to go from friend to foe to friend and then maybe to neutral. The dialogue itself was not very entertaining. It would seem that all people at that time (at least in this book) were all dour and cheerless. The characters just were not well fleshed out. Perhaps that had been taken care of in earlier books in the series. While people were seeking out plots and plotters against the Queen and her people, it seemed they were more intent on working against each other rather than helping for the common good. If you have a person who may have valuable information, lock him in a friend's cellar so no one else can question him. It seemed that if a person may have some information, he would immediately be thrown in jail to await some heavy questioning. John may not have approved of torture but it seemed he had little sympathy for people involved in the plots, no matter how innocently or forced in they were. To me he did not seem like a very nice person.
I had hoped that there would be some interaction between John and William Shakespeare. There was a little at the very beginning and again at the very end. There just was not enough to make this rather dreary novel more interesting.
