Preface

For a long time, I wondered if the recently popularized time-frequency and wavelet transforms were merely academic exercises. Do applied engineers and scientists really need signal processing tools other than the FFT? After 10 years of working with engineers and scientists from a wide variety of disciplines, I have finally come to the conclusion that, so far, neither the time-frequency nor wavelet transform appear to have had the revolutionary impact upon physics and pure mathematics that the Fourier transform has had. Nevertheless, they can be used to solve many real-world problems that the classical Fourier transform cannot.

As James Kaiser once said, "The most widely used signal processing tool is the FFT; the most widely misused signal processing tool is also the FFT." Fourier transform-based techniques are effective as long as the frequency contents of the signal do not change with time. However, when the frequency contents of the data samples evolve over an observation period, time-frequency or wavelet transforms should be considered. Specifically, the time-frequency transform is suited for signals with slow frequency changes (narrow instantaneous bandwidth), such as sounds heard during an engine run-up or run-down, whereas the wavelet transform is suited for signals with rapid changes (wide instantaneous frequency bandwidth), such as sounds associated with engine knocking. The success of applications of the time-frequency and wavelet transforms largely hinges on understanding their fundamentals. It is the goal of this book to provide a brief introduction to time-frequency and wavelet transforms for those engineers and scientists who want to use these techniques in their applications, and for students who are new to these topics.

Keeping this goal in mind, I have included the two related subjects, time-frequency and wavelet transforms, under a single cover so that readers can grasp the necessary information and come up to speed in a short time. Professors can cover these topics in a single semester. The co-existence of the time-frequency and wavelet approaches in one book, I believe, will help comparative understanding and make complementary use easier.

This book can be viewed in two parts. While Chapters Two through Six focus on linear transforms, mainly the Gabor expansion and the wavelet transform, Chapters Seven through Nine are dedicated to bilinear time-frequency representations. Chapter Ten can be thought of as a combination of time-frequency and time-scale (that is, wavelets) decomposition. The presentation of the wavelet transform in this book is aimed at readers who need to know only the basics and perhaps apply these new techniques to solve problems with existing commercial software. It may not be sufficient for academic researchers interested in creating their own set of basic functions by techniques other than the elementary filter banks introduced here.

All chapters start with the discussion of basic concepts and motivation, then provide theoretical analysis and, finally, numerical implementation. Most algorithms introduced in this book are a part of the software package, Signal Processing Toolset, a National Instruments product. Visit ni for more information about this software.

This book is neither a research monograph nor an encyclopedia, and the materials presented here are believed to be the most basic fundamentals of time-frequency and wavelet analysis. Many theoretically excellent results, which are not practical for digital implementation, have been omitted. The contents of this book should provide a strong foundation for the time-frequency and wavelet analysis neophyte, as well as a good review tutorial for the more experienced signal-processing reader.

I wrote this book to appeal to the reader's intuition rather than to rely on abstract mathematical equations and wanted the material to be easily understood by a reader with an engineering or science undergraduate education. To achieve this, mathematical rigor and lengthy derivation have been sacrificed in many places. Hopefully, this style will not unduly offend purists.

On the other hand, "Formulas were not invented simply as weapons of intimidation" 22. In many cases, mathematical language, I feel, is much more effective than plain English. Words are sometimes clumsy and ambiguous. For me, it is always a joy to refresh my knowledge of what I learned in school but have not used since.

An excellent book on signal processing

This book studies the two signal properties we are most interested in, time and frequency. Unlike other books, which usually concentrate on one topic of advanced signal processing, this book covers both time-frequency and wavelet analysis. The author organizes these topics in a clear structure with vivid English. The reviews at the beginning of every chapter are very
helpful for readers. Before I have this book, I read some mathematics books on wavelet analysis that were difficult to understand. The author explains the theories not only mathematically but also physically. Thus, this book gives me great help during my research on vibration and noise control,
modal analysis and acoustical signal processing. I strongly recommend this book to those who study signal processing.

Better wavelet books out there

This book is divided into two sections: Time Frequency and Wavelets. Sadly, Shie Qian does not provide comprehensiveness in either subject, nor does he add to the knowledge base. I was expecting a more "cookbook" introductory approach to wavelets, but alas, for naught. To add insult to injury, there is not a hardcover version available to date. For shame.

My recommendations:

1. If you want to learn Time-Frequency analysis (windowed Fourier Transforms, Wigner-Ville ala Cohen's Class) -- download the Rice Time-Frequency Toolbox(for Matlab) and associated documentation. It's free, and the tutorials are outstanding. Not to mention, Qian seems to make liberal usage of it the book in question.

2a. For the electrical engineer, find a book that approaches wavelets by either branching off of Fourier Theory(provides a grounding in orthogonal, separable bases) or via subband coding(which correlates with the computation of wavelet transforms). Mallat's Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing is pretty good.

2b. For the math wiz(or those engineers with masochistic tendencies), find something with an angle on Riesz frames and bases. Avoid subband coding like the plague if you're not into block diagrams. A good start is Daubechies 10 Lectures on Wavelets, or anything through Birkhauser publishing.

WAY too simple!!

I have never posted a negative review before but I'm so dumbfounded after reading all the 5 star reviews. I thought I should share my point of view to help others weigh the pros and cons to see if this book is really a good fit. I learned it certainly was NOT a good fit for us after reviewing this book in whole.

I bought this book because my son tested on the low end of average on a test, so not a serious problem, just in need of some focus and learning test taking skills. I spoke to my mother about this book as she worked for an excellent school system writing the actual reading tests given to kids, then for a publisher of text books. She stated that kids at this age need to learn both strong reading comprehension as well as good test taking skills... that the writers of these tests try to fool kids into wrong answers, in a way. They do this by making the answer options all similar to things mentioned in the paragraph in question, leaving the correct answer not clear to those that either didn't bother to fully read the relevant paragraph or to those that are truly having trouble retaining the facts as represented in the paragraph. However, this book (in my opinion) is full of questions so simple, little or no reading let alone comprehension seems to be necessary to find the correct answer. This might even actually teach kids that it is often ok to skip or skim the segment and that common sense can often answer questions correctly. This could be devastating if a parent is hoping to improve test taking skills and help teach a child to focus and retain important information they have read and once the child takes a real test, is lost in the weeds. On the other hand, this may be good for kids that have a major reading and vocab issue that needs attention.

Here are some examples of what I am talking about. These are questions in the book. If you can answer these on your own without reading a word of the paragraph on which the question is based... and you think your 3rd grader can, too, then you may want to keep looking for a tougher book.

In this story, the word SIMPLE means:
a. easy b. happy c. hidden d. loving (Hint: The answer is so easy, a 3rd grader can surely get it without comprehending anything.)

What do we use for money today?
a. gold b. shells c. bills and coins d. beans and beads (Hint: Welp, if a 3rd grade thinks you paid beans for this, the purchaser didn't pay too much.)

And much more just like this. In short, this book is probably a good book for someone that has a child really struggling. Those in need of a little help and focus, but on grade level, will probably need something with more umph and substance. This isn¡¦t a lot of money to lose, but for folks excited to help work with their kids on this like I am, the delay caused by having to order another book is disappointing, so heads up. º

Excellent book for first grade.

Love this book for my first graders. It has a complete reading comprehension in all DOK skills. By the readings, they can develop other comprehension areas needed for the grade. They are short but very interesting reading, it has illustrations for them like little games. In overall is very attractive for them to have the needed attention that reading requires.

Great test prep!

Great test prep for my son. He needed practice taking "bubble" tests, especially following different directions, and this really helped. Reading comprehension, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, multiple meanings and study skills are just some of the areas covered. It showed me what areas we needed to work on and helped him to be more confident when he took his standardized test.
