Essential for Lewis Carroll fans

Lewis Carroll was in "real life" Charles Dodgson, lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University and author of books on geometry and logic. Mathematics intrudes into his children's books, especially Sylvie and Bruno. There is nobody better qualified to explain this side of Lewis Carroll to the non-mathematician than Martin Gardner, author of the Annotated Alice and for many years the compiler of the Mathematical Puzzles column in Scientific American. This book will delight Carroll's many fans and may intrigue many who would not normally be attracted to children's fiction. I also recommend the two books on Lewis Carroll's puzzles by Edward Wakeling; as a professional mathematician, he brings a complementary perspective.

We have Martin Gardner to thank for his efforts in explaining about the author everyone knows as the author of what they think is a Children's book.Known as Lewis Carroll,the author's real name was Charles Lutwidge Dobson was a competent mathematician and taught mathematics at Christ Church,Oxford.
He had a strong sense of mathematical beauty and entertained many in expressing this fondness in mathematical games,puzzles,logic, paradoxes,magic tricks,riddles,and every variety of word play,especially word games puns,anagrams,anagrams,and acrostic verse;all published under the name of Lewis Carroll.Two of his best known books,"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" are filled ,though somewhat hidden,with puzzles,paradoxes,word play,etc.Words,numbers,games entertained Carroll and those around him throughout his life.
Gardner's book brings all this out to us and shows why he was such an important figure in the world of Mathematical Recreations and as well as other forms of entertainment and games.
One of Carroll's favorite pursuits was what is called Doublets.Most people who like word games of various types will be familiar with these.The object is to take a word such as COLD and by changing one letter at a time,making different words ,ending up with the word WARM.The real challenge is to do this in the least number of steps.Thus we have COLD,CORD,CARD,WARM.--4 steps.This can lead to all kinds of interesting posers.Carroll,actually a skeptic of Darwin's theory,"evolved" MAN from APE in six steps:
APE,ARE,ERE,ERR,EAR,MAR,MAN.
Another interesting poser is to change IRON into LEAD:
IRON,ICON,COIN,CORN,CORD,LORD,LOAD,LEAD.
Another of Carroll's interest was Mazes and we are given a very interesting Maze Carroll created in his early twenties.Another of his puzzles ,called river-crossing puzzles is given.This type of puzzle has been presented by many other puzzlers over the years.

Seriously or For Fun

Ask and It Will Happen by Joanne Gregory is a handy, self-help reminder that the best Secret to a happy life is that the "Universe" is always listening and always ready to send help to you for whatever you need. Some call the helper angels, some prayer, some God, but whatever your religious beliefs, or lack thereof, these cards are handy reminders to keep your wishes known and speak them, believe help is on its way. Each card in the pretty deck is a handy reminder to keep on keeping, each tells a different or unique way to do so. The cards are accompanied by a little book, which tells in a paragraph how to do what that card says, with the idea that you choose one each day from the card deck. My only complaint is that the print in the little book is too small to read easily. Fun to use, and can really help you stay positive in hard times.

An excellent intention or affirmation deck

I purchased these on a whim and I think they make great affirmation or intention cards. If there's something you want to focus on (spending more time to yourself, for instance, then choose that card and use the awesome display window that's included on the box (great idea!)...

Otherwise, it's a solid oracle deck as well. A very versatile deck because you really don't HAVE to use it as an oracle deck and could strictly use it as an affirmation deck, as I mentioned.

The images are very nice. An artsy collage look with fairly soft colors (though that varies a bit, thank goodness--it bothers me when a deck is just nothing but soft colors. It get a bit bland...) I would certainly recommend this deck. Gets five stars because I can't think of anything I really dislike about it.

The cards are very nicely done, but it was not as I expected and I have collected many card oracles. If you want to use the cards for affirmation than this is a good choice.

Not recommeded: Difficult & No errata

A good text book should have clear and concise definitions throughout the book or at least a glossary. However, this book has neither. Examples are either vague or contorted. Visual cues would have been helpful.

Even though it shows the answers for odd numbered exercises, some of the answers have errors. I also bought the solutions manual, (with only odd numbered solutions), but it also has errors and/or it doesn't match some of the books answers. I expected to find something useful in the solutions manual, as I paid $25 for it, but I didn't. I have found no errata for this book.

I had to buy it because it was my course's book, but I definitely do not recommend it. Whoever said that this was a good, easy-to-read book, must have been reading another book. I had to have a math professor tutoring me for my online course and even he had a hard time reading the book.

Wikipedia has much better explanations!

I used this book for a sophomore level Discrete Math class in the CS program at Park university. It was pretty difficult to understand for everybody in the class including myself and I've had math through Calc III. It was apparently not written for that level student.

This book is horrible.

I feel as though you need a math degree to even get through it. I'm not the best at Math but I'm not an idiot. I'm in programming and I can code fairly well, but this book confuses the hell out of me. It's been making my semester terrible, and unfortunately it's my course required text. FOR ANY TEACHERS OR PROFESSORS READING, PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR STUDENTS. It will make them want to change majors, or kill themselves.

Practical, To-the-point Requirements User Guide for Managers

Ivy F. Hooks and Kristin A. Farry give their audience a clear methodology about how to eliminate rework and unnecessary features rooted in poor requirement definition for making product development or procurement faster and cheaper without sacrificing the better. Good requirement definition is more important than ever to especially fast-paced high-tech companies for which researching, developing, and commercializing products on schedule and within budget is key to be, become, and remain competitive. Interestingly, Hooks and Farry explain to their readers the profound impact that culture, education, and management have on requirement definition. Their critical examination of the "seven cultural forces that define Americans" in chapter 2 helps their (foreign) audience better understand why some (American) marketers have no time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again to quote Kevin J. Clancy and Peter C. Krieg in their excellent Counter-intuitive Marketing. Hooks and Farry remind their audience that nothing can change for the faster, cheaper, and better without a management commitment. Management must make very clear through their entire organization that quality products begin long before design and manufacture. These products find their genesis in quality requirements. To summarize, Customer-Centered Products is a must read for anyone involved/interested in product development or sourcing. The only weakness of the book lies in the concentration of examples from a few industries about which Hooks and Farry are very knowledgeable.

One of the best product books on the market!

Hooks and Farry show you how to get it right the FIRST time, providing practical, easy to follow directions to achieve what every company wants - faster, better, cheaper products that are SUCCESSFUL. This book explains product management from an engineering perspective that is as practical as it is useful (unlike other books that put too much 'marketing spin' on product management, making it seem more like some mystical process). 3/4 of the way through this book I called the authors, and they are now coaching our entire company on this philosophy. And it's working!

Great book which can be easily applied

I am working on a key project and needed methodology to improve
how we specified the product we wanted. I found the book to be very useful and we are applying its methodology to our current project with great success. Only improvement might be additional info on what software is available to do requirements planning for smaller, non-software, related projects.
