clearest undergrad differential geometry text around

This is a very well-written text on modern differential geometry for undergraduates. The content of the book is similar to O'Neill's "Elementary Differential Geometry" (e.g. covariant derivatives, shape operators), but it's easier to read. There are many undergrad texts around -- O'Neill, do Carmo, Pressley -- but this one is the most lucidly written one hands-down.

Afer going through Oprea, one might like to tackle O'Neill's "Elementary Differential Geometry" and Vols 2-4 of Spivak's "Comprehensive Introduction to D.G."

Like O'Neill, Oprea develops surface theory using the shape operator. But Oprea takes shortcuts and doesn't develop the theory in quite the same generality as O'Neill does. For example, Oprea doesn't introduce differential forms and the exterior calculus. As a consequence, Oprea restricts himself to the Serret-Frenet equations whereas O'Neill introduces Cartan's structural equations -- of which Serret-Frenet is simply a special case -- as the method of moving frames in full generality. The structural equations are then used (by O'Neill) in both curve and surface theory.

The other reviewers are correct; that this is an excellent introductory text that fits into the undergraduate curriculum following the normal calculus sequence for scientists and engineers.
Sadly, however, its power has been greatly weakened by changes that have been made in MAPLE, an applications program that is used in the book to illustrate geometrical points. Syntactical changes made as MAPLE has evolved from version 10 to version 18 and beyond, have made it impossible to run Oprea' demonstrations. Without these demonstrations, a very interesting and useful book has been rendered less effective.

One can hope that eventual updates and a version three is in the planning process. Perhaps the author can find some interest at MAPLE about speeding up an update of this book.

Nice introduction and applications of differential geometry

I found this book to be a fine introduction to this subject. I was particularly pleased with the practical examples outlined in the book. Even though I am not extremely proficient with Maple, I found the exercises using this software provided important illustrations of applications.

This study reveals that martial spectacles were highly charged sites of contestation, where Ming emperors and senior court ministers staked claims about rulership, ruler-minister relations, and the role of the military in the polity. Simultaneously colorful entertainment, prestigious social events, and statements of power, martial spectacles were intended to make manifest the ruler’s personal generosity, keen discernment, and respect for family tradition. They were, however, subject to competing interpretations that were often beyond the emperor’s control or even knowledge. By situating Ming martial spectacles in the wider context of Eurasia, David Robinson brings to light the commensurability of the Ming court with both the Mongols and Manchus but more broadly with other early modern courts such as the Timurids, the Mughals, and the Ottomans.

Martial Spectacles of the Ming Court contributes greatly to our knowledge of Ming rulership, the relations of Ming emperors and their ministers, and the place of the Ming in Eurasian patterns of rulership. In examining this neglected but major aspect of Ming governance, David Robinson has gathered an impressive array of sources, including Korean records of the Ming court, and placed them in their proper contexts. This work continues Robinson's project of breaking down the scholarly Great Wall mentality by incorporating the Ming into Eurasian historiography in a way that facilitates comparisons between the Ming and other early modern empires. Martial Spectacles of the Ming Court properly situates the Ming within the broader scope of Eurasian history and highlights the important roles played by martial culture in sustaining the Ming imperium. David Robinson illuminates how martial culture has been obscured in the historical record by disapproving civil officials who, after all, wrote most of the surviving accounts. Such an exercise requires a careful reading of sources and a deep understanding of the political context in each case, and Robinson is to be commended for his erudition and breadth of knowledge in this regard. This book fills a very important void in the existing scholarship and substantially advances our knowledge of martial displays and their importance for the manifestation of Ming power both within and without the empire. Each photo brings you to a different level of understanding in how we perceive nature in both it's delicate state and in it's surprising strength. There are revelations on each and every page that capture your attention. It is simply remarkable!

A TRUE MASTERPIECE

On a recent trip to Europe, I came across this BEAUTIFUL book.As a lover of flowers, I fell in love with the book, and upon returning home to America, I had to have it. Several more for gifts, too! It is a masterpiece.The book itself is a work of art, the photos inside are breathtaking.Ms. Hausler is a true talent,capturing rare beauty,creating unique photos and kind enough to share her inspiring photos with the world. I look very forward to her next book.

Mesmerizing!

Minh Hausler’s The Fusion of Flora and Art is filled with images that seem to energetically rise from the page with a remarkable ability to stimulate the mind. Each composition is a skillful juxtaposition of flora and inanimate components that together form an exquisite homage to nature. The visual impact ranges from the beautiful to the playfully idiosyncratic. The author choreographs a symphony of creative tension, exploration, and improvisation that I find captivating and open to reinterpretation. The images are dynamic as they induce a sense of movement and an appreciation for time and the ephemeral nature of existence. Each composition stands on its own as a work of art. The book is divided into chapters such as The Art of Momentum and In Search of Simplicity. Many images seem initially to be an invitation to meditate, but further observation stimulates curiosity, and then a sense of wonder. It took me less than a minute to decide to purchase this book based on the superb quality of the photographs, and four months later, I am still in the process of discovering it. This process is facilitated by the text. The author is a serious student of life and art. This book makes a beautiful gift (I have already gifted the book to two friends) and I have other friends who, upon reviewing my book, purchased their own copies. My appreciation for this work grows each time I revisit its pages.

Our class struggled with this one...

Admittedly, statistics is a challenging subject, but if it's well taught, smart and conscientious students will grasp it. Part of teaching it well calls for a textbook that understands students' needs and abilities, and can lead them systematically from where they are to higher levels of understanding and ability. For my money, Wonnacott & Wonnacott's Introductory Statistics is a clumsy effort in this respect. There isn't enough explanation of new concepts. The graphics and layout aren't very appealing. The examples weren't that useful for our class of social science majors. And each chapter is interrupted repeatedly with practice questions, which get in the way of building on concepts and maintaining a flow. As one other suffering student remarks here, you do a lot of flipping back and forth. OK, so statistics is hard; but this text makes it more difficult than it has to be, and less interesting than it can be. I speak not just for myself: this fall I was in a graduate class of bright, able, hard-working people, and many of them were having a very rough time of it. Something's wrong pedagogically when that happens. Let me recommend an alternative text--Minium, Clarke, & Coladarci's "Elements of Statistical Reasoning," second edition. I used this text four years ago in another intro class taught by Coladarci himself. He's a very talented educator, and he got a classroom full of math-anxious students through some very challenging stuff. Don't take my word for it, though. Check out the reviews on Amazon. They're deservedly very positive. I found myself going back to that book throughout this past semester whenever I was in deep water with Wonnacott and Wonnacott. Once again it pulled me through.

Been around forever
By not a natural
The Wonacott's, it seems, have been around forever, writing statistics texts of pretty good quality. I benefitted from their regression text when I was first got into regression analysis, and it was only afterward that I read their text on introductory statistics (second edition). Fortunately for me, it was on the shelf in the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Wonnacott's introductory text is a good one, but I doubt that I could use it with the beginning statistics students I teach every semester. Though they are not lacking in intelligence, they seem, almost everyone, to struggle with anything mathematical. Furthermore, insofar as the material is theoretical rather than practical and concrete, they struggle even more.

When evaluating Wonnacott's text, I think it is useful to bear in mind that they themselves are most accustomed to dealing with students in mathematics and economics. As a result, they are justified in assuming that their students have both the capability and interest to handle more difficult material. For students taking statistics under duress, however, especially those who have little or no interest in applying statistics to the disciplines they are studying, Wonnacott's otherwise solid text is not the best choice.

So, while I've enjoyed reading Wonnacott's introductory text, I don't think I'm selling my students short when I say that this is not the book for them. Levin and Fox they can handle, largly because it de-emphasizes theoretical concepts in favor of practical applications.

If you're so inclined, however, this is a good text for self-instruction or review. If you're using it for self-instruction, don't rush and don't expect to read the book from start to finish without struggling a bit with some of the concepts. Wonnacott's introductory text is sufficiently sophisticated that it merits close study and discloses some of the irritatingly counter-intuitive ideas that undergird statistics.

Excellent Introductory Text

This text provides a thorough introduction to the use of mathematical statistics. Carefully reading the text and solving a reasonable number of the problems will provide one with the capability to apply statistical techniques to analyze data and draw conclusions in real applications. The book is strong on examples but light on theory. Particulary noteworhty is the inclusion of several topics (such as Monte Carlo methods and Bayesian decision theory) that typically are not covered in an introductory presentation. Also useful are the end of chapter "Final Challenges" that require the reader to have mastered the material. If one's objective is to apply statistics to draw appropriate inferences and make decisions, this text will provide the reader with the required tools.
