About the Author

Ellen Astrachan-Fletcher, Ph.D., is founder and director of the eating disorders clinic at the University of Illinois Medical Center, where she is also an associate professor. She has over ten years of clinical experience as a licensed clinical psychologist, specializing in eating disorders and women's mental health issues. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Michael Maslar, Psy.D., is founder and director of the Mindfulness and Behavior Therapies Program at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. He is also an assistant professor at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL. Maslar has extensive training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

good tool for recovering bulimics

DBT has been proven a effective strategy for dealing with eating disorders; bulimics often have a distorted sense of reality and priorities, and this workbook can provide the patient with that realization while offering useful tools. As with many bulimia books, it provides background on this disorder, its causes and symptoms and treatments.

There are many exercises aimed toward helping the bulimic understand herself. These are often taxing to do because when one isn't in "bulimic mood", it's difficult to imagine how one feels in "bulimic mood". I found the benefit from the exercises not during or even soon after completing them -- their effect would often hit me weeks later as I came to understand their full implications.

Two exercises stood out to me in particular. One was wherein the patient needed to write out a "purpose" for her life (an important step of DBT). Many bulimics will have trouble with this, as they consider their lives purposeless. The book offers the suggestion of "to be healthier", which is a practical purpose that will appeal to anyone. The other exercise consisted of writing a letter to oneself from the perspective of one's body -- I felt very touched and ashamed as I realized all that my body did and tried to do for me, despite receiving my scorn instead of appreciation.

I subtracted one star because the authors do at times seem a bit patronizing and overly firm -- too clinical and too little compassion -- and being the sensitive issue that bulimia is, I imagine it could turn off patients.

More than a guide, it's a peek inside native living

Gabi Yetter's book is not your usual guidebook, but really a sojourn into the heart of Cambodia, as seen through sensitive eyes and across several years and many miles of exploration. Gabi has an affinity for the people and their everyday lives and she rarely misses both the charms and the not-charms she encounters. As an expat, she came to Cambodia already skilled at looking at different cultures and being able to select out their gifts. This book is a compendium of such gifts, especially for those who,like Gabi and Skip Yetter, fulfill the dream of changing countries, lifestyles, and cultures and trying something entirely new. The photos are terrific and the writing easy to digest. It's got my vote for a great and useful guide to this part of Southeast Asia.

This Definitive Guide is definitely helpful

This is a concise, comprehensive and entertaining book that would be helpful for a tourist but invaluable for someone who wants to move to Cambodia for an extended period, told by an experienced traveler who has been in Cambodia long enough to know how things work there but not so long that she's forgotten what the transition was like.

You'd easily recoup the cost of the book with the money you saved just by reading the paragraph on the fair cost of a ride to town from the Phnom Penh airport. As an added bonus, you get brief summaries of the country's history and culture, invaluable tips on health care, food, networking, and apartment hunting, plus any number of facts you'd be unlikely to discover elsewhere. (Who knew foreigners tend to be charged more for electricity than locals or that police will fine you for driving with headlights on during the day, but not necessarily for driving without them at night?)

Even if you're thinking about moving to a different country than Cambodia, the book will get you thinking about any number of questions you might not have thought to ask.

This book gives you plenty to ponder without being ponderous, and includes links to a number of helpful Web sites and resources.

Full disclosure: I stayed as a guest of the author and her husband, so I'm biased, but I can vouch for the accuracy of everything I encountered that the book describes.

I loved this book!!! I moved to Cambodia almost 3 years ago and WISH I had something like this back then!!!

The book is well written and flows nicely. There are no big, fluffy words (something that really annoys me when reading other books)...it is straight and to the point and gives you exactly the information you need.

What is written is informative and REAL! As a current resident of Cambodia, I can tell you what the author tells you is true...I loved how she added the way to say things in Khmer and how she seems to have spoken with real people living here to get you the information you need.

If moving to Cambodia, a definite MUST HAVE!!!

Although Rose (history, California State Univ., Chico; American Women and the Repeal of Prohibition) might have wished his popular history of the Cold War to work from below ground on up, his excavation of the great fear of the Fifties reveals a discourse overwhelmingly top-down. Government and civic elites propagandized for shelters built from theoretical funds that mostly were never appropriated; average citizens fretted that their neighbors were building bunkers to exclude them come Armageddon, yet apparently very few private spaces were ever erected. Rose demonstrates that the shelter was the leading if least visible icon of a civil defense debate that questioned whether nuclear wars were confinable, hence survivable, but also whether shelter was more practical or at least not incompatible with mass evacuation. Rose reconstructs Herman Kahn, the pro-limited nuclear war physicist/Dr. Strangelove model, as the most intriguing if possibly insane personage in his account but leaves much possibly fertile soil unturned. (What did history's most famous shelterists, the World War II British, think of their Yankee cousins' official mania only a few years later?) The struggle within the USA...

Fallout shelters were a major point of debate during the Cold War. Should we make them? Would they really save millions of people? Would making them suggest we could win a nuclear war with the USSR? Would preparing for war make our enemies less likely to fight a war with us? Or would it drive them to desperate measures, would it make them think we WANTED a war? Would shelters increase the CHANCES of war? These debates roared throughout the USA, within the government, in the public's mind, and within the sphere of the news agencies.
First, of course, was the cost of building enough shelters to save our populace. Nobody wanted to foot the bill.
Than the math, or should I say science, behind the shelters. Most supporters pointed out they would work in a limited nuclear exchange - after a few weeks humankind could come out of the shelters and rebuild civilization. But in a massive nuclear war, even those on the side of building the shelters, understood that their shelters would be like closing the barn doors after the horses had escaped.
Also, there was the fears of what shelters were doing to people. You have a shelter in your backyard. The bombs start to fall...and you do what? Do you lock out the rest of your friends? Do you shoot down your neighbors begging to be let in? Are people making shelters in their backyard going to become gun owning, food hoarding, heartless survivors? And what does that say about them NOW, in times of peace?
How do we train kids to handle this? What part will the school system play in this? The States?
In the end shelters were built but no where near the numbers needed to protect the people of the US. We didn't have a nuclear war, which is a good thing, and how much of that is because of our own soul-searching? Did the debate of shelters allow the public to confront our fears, explore our values, and help us define what kind of people we wanted to be? Did we want to become Mole People or stay Human? Did we want to run away from our fears, digging into the earth?
A book with amazing depth and a must for anybody interested in history, the Cold War, and human beings.

Fascinating Analysis

One Nation Underground is a fascinating analysis of the Cold War fallout shelter, the global and political milieu in which it emerged, and the pervasiveness in which the concept of protection from nuclear destruction permeated the American psyche.
I came to this book out of a recent, amusing interest in the many remaining Fallout Shelter signs still posted on public buildings in my community. Where I live, Fallout Shelter signs still appear on a derelict retail board-up in the central city, a tidy ten-unit men's rooming house, an unused police station, and numerous school buildings including my old grammar school where I learned how to "duck and cover" in the basement lunchroom.
Rose's book not only documents the American preoccupation and political developments, prompted by President Kennedy's 1961 speech, but the moral dilemmas as well. There was, after all,, a sense of doom at the prospects of thermonuclear obliteration.
The book is a serious, engrossing history that pulls from numerous sources and includes copious illustrations. It captures the fear, soul-searching, and debate during the first time in human history we faced the possibility of total destruction. This excellent book is a must read for anyone interested in American history, as well as the intellectually curious.

Digging This Book

If you're a student of Cold War culture, many of the source materials used throughout One Nation Underground will be familiar to you. That's not to imply that One Nation is boring, regurgitated, or any such adjective. Rather, Rose has crafted and extremely interesting look at how fallout shelters, for a brief period of time, was on the tip of everyones tongue, and yet despite the warnings and fears, America as a whole pretty much refused to dig in. Rose not only looks at the politics behind fallout shelters, but the historical, scientific, and cultural aspects, providing many sides both for and against civil defense, and explaining why those against won the argument and America's psyche. Rose's prose is never boring and always enlightening. A must read for any CW culture afficionado.

Yi KWANG-SU (1892-1950) was one of the pioneers of modern Korean literature. When the serialization of Mujông (The Heartless) began in 1917, it was an immediate sensation, and it occupies a prominent place in the Korean literary canon. The Heartless is the story of a love triangle among three youths during the Japanese occupation. Yi Hyông-sik is a young man in his mid-twenties who is teaching English at a middle school in Seoul. Brilliant but also shy and indecisive, he is torn between two women. Kim Sôn-hyông is from a wealthy Christian family; she has just graduated from a modern, Western-style school and is planning on continuing her studies in the United States. Pak Yông-ch’ae is a musically gifted young woman who was raised in a traditional Confucian manner; due to family misfortune, she has become a kisaeng but remains devoted to Hyông-sik whom she knew as a child. The Heartless goes beyond the level of romantic melodrama and uses these characters to depict Korea’s struggles with modern culture and national identity. A long critical introduction discusses Yi Kwang-su’s life and work from his birth in 1892 to the publication of his first novel The Heartless in 1917. It contains in-depth analyses of the novel, Yi Kwang-su’s literary theory, and early short stories.

If you have a spare weekend...

Spend it with this. Mujong was one of the first modern Korean "entertainment" literature novels. It is a serial riddled with love, sex, betrayal, social reform, family tradition, religious collision, and much more. With the sudden Korean-rage happening with their current pop culture, it is very interesting to take a look at the past and give yourself a frame to work through. Happy reading!

A historical book.

I have known the original Korean version of this book since I was in the middle school, some 60 years ago and read the original book a couple of times. This is a historical book for this is the first novel written in mordern Korean language, much closer to the vernacular and first novel published serially on a newspaper in early 20th centrury. The fact that it was translated by the author's granddauhgter in English is another epochal event. The translation is excellent in that I could not tell if I was reading this in English or original Korean version. As a bilingual, it's amazing experience.to me. The value of the book is unspeakable. One also can peak in the trasitional phase in the culture of Korea around the turn of 20th century and on. I will treasure this book.

Don't buy this "deluxe" version

This so-called "Deluxe" edition includes 24 video lectures from informit.com. These lectures are already available for free on coursera, so to charge money for them here is silly. I advise purchasing the textbook and following along with the coursera class.

From the Author
When I began writing these stories, my only intention was to save them for family members to remember me by. After friends heard me read a couple to groups on various occasions, they urged me to pull the collection together into a single volume, an eBook, they said. A funny thing happened as I began assembling loose stories into a consolidated collection. As happens while writing any memoir, new memories and insights emerged, and this cherished topic took on new depth and meaning for me. Beneath the humor that's always been there, I found a solid base of historical significance. While I had not initially envisioned it as a formal memoir, when I began threading the individual stories together, a story arc emerged, and additional reflection transformed that initial pile of stories into a true memoir -- in this case a mini-memoir. Adventures of a Chilehead is a short book, the memoir equivalent of a novella. This short form is ideal for tightly focused topics such as this. I'm hopeful that with the advent of easily produced eBooks, additional authors will make use of this form, providing readers with mind-snacks they can read in a short period of time.  The recipes are an afterthought requested by early readers. They were a challenge to write, partly because I'm an intuitive, impulsive cook who considers recipes mere suggestions, and partly because of the impulsive, unpredictable nature of chile itself. These recipes are unique in giving guidance on how to adjust your cooking to take both your tolerance levels and the variable heat of chile into account and produce meals that satisfy without overwhelming.

Such fun and a lotta spice!

Sharon Lippincott has turned out to be one spicy tamale and her writing reflects this.

I enjoyed reading this short memoir/recipe book. There are a lot of laughs to be had as the author takes you on a multi-decade adventure through her experiences with all things spicy. I loved her narrator voice in this book and that she was not only recounting things she had learned, but reflecting on her life and what those experiences meant to her at the time they happened.

If you are another of the Chileheads who adore all things HOTT! Then this book will certainly appeal to you, not only for the great writing but for the chance to try out the many recipes at the end of the memoir.

I giggled as Sharon talked about her love of heat and her experiences with various types of chiles (E not I) and her inability to resist them.

This was a short, fun read with a lot to offer those who love to cook and love to turn up the heat in the kitchen. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a laugh. Even if you prefer milder foods, this memoir has something for everyone.

A spicy adventure that will leave you hungry for Mexican food.

If you are looking for a witty, light-hearted story, you have come to the right place. Sharon Lippincott turns a relatively mundane topic--her love of chiles--into an adventuresome, humorous series of vignettes that back up her claim of being a self-professed "chilehead" or lover of anything chile.

You may wonder how interesting these tales really can be, but Sharon's rich, detailed descriptions will bring you right into the experience. Your eyes may even water and your tongue may burn as you imagine yourself biting into a chile pepper.

Here's an excerpt:

"My fingers ached to caress the cool smoothness of those peppers, to explore the rhythm of gently undulating curves and subtle crevices. I yearned to inhale their delicate green scent. I longed for the crisp crunch between my molars and tiny scorch bombs exploding with each bite."

With chapter titles such as: Breathing Fire, Death by Salsa, Great Balls of Fire, you can't help but be enticed to delve into the story. She even provides research into not only the health benefits of capsaicin, an ingredient in chile but also the origin of the "chili vs chile" debate.

As a bonus, Sharon also includes her favorite recipes, including corn tortillas, red chile sauce, Marmalade Madness among many others. One is left with a fuller appreciation of one of life's greatest pleasures--enjoying your favorite foods. You may even decide to become a "chilehead " yourself. A delightful read!

A Hot Little Book

This little book is a hoot! Funny! Delightful! You will learn about various kinds of chiles, and the author's personal recipes using chiles are the last third of the book. The first two-thirds are stories from the author's experiences with buying, cooking and eating chiles and dishes that include them. The first chapter explains why it is spelled "Chile" and not "Chili." It is not a serious book, but therein lies its charm. The stories will entertain you for a couple of hours or so. They include the author's self-effacing mistakes and the reactions of friends and family to her hot dishes. As a long-time fan of Mexican food living in a part of the country that doesn't have good Mexican restaurants, I can hardly wait to try some of the recipes. Where can you get a cookbook and a story book for $2.99?
