In 1972 The Limits of Growth , sponsored by the Club of Rome and produced by a research team on a MIT computer programmed with a World3 model, created a stormy sensation. Denounced as eco-gloom and doom, the book also became a keystone of the era's environmentalism. Now on the eve of the June U.N. Earth Summit, three of the researchers give World3 another run. Although many books and reports examine "sustainability," the authors provide unique insights thanks to their background in systems analysis. Society has gone into overshoot, they argue, a state of being beyond limits without knowing it. These limits are more like speed limits than barriers at the end of the road: the rate at which renewable resources can renew themselves, the rate at which we can change from nonrenewable resources to renewable ones, and the rate at which nature can recycle our pollution. Without being a catch-all on the environmental crisis, the book shows how we are overshooting such crucial resources as food and water while overwhelming nature with pollutants like those causing global warming. World3 runs 13 future scenarios and learns that we can only avoid collapse by unplugging the exponential growth in population (two billions people in the past 20 years) and industrial production (doubled in the past 20 years). If the world settles for two children per couple and the per capita income of South Korea, we can avoid collapse and find an equilibrium at 7.7 billion people through 2100. Systems analysis may sound like an academic specialty, but the authors have written for the general reader and provide a compelling challenge to traditional economics and public complacency.

A sequel to the Club of Rome's Limits to Growth (1972. o.p.), Beyond the Limits uses a sophisticated computer modeling program to project into the next century the consequences of current rates of resource consumption and population growth. A number of modified scenarios are then illustrated, showing the impact on the global environment of alternative patterns of allocation and consumption. While its graphs and tables may intimidate some, Beyond the Limits is clearly written, nonpolemical, and rewards the patient reader. Particularly interesting is the discussion of the crisis with the ozone layer as exemplary of the ability of the world's governments to respond to environmental crises. However, it is the fundamental principles underlying this book that set it apart. Beyond the Limits recognizes that the future doesn't lie in tinkering with resource use or simply squelching population growth in developing countries. A sustainable future will require profound social and psychological readjustments in the developed and developing world. Highly recommended.

An impressive sequel to the controversial and influential Limits to Growth (1972) prepared by three of the authors of that environmental clarion call and based on worldwide data compiled during the past 20 years. Donella H. Meadows (Environmental Studies/Dartmouth), Dennis L. Meadows (Management Studies/Univ. of New Hampshire), and Randers (Policy Analysis/Norwegian School of Management) use a vast array of statistics, projections, and charts to assert that global limits have already been exceeded in certain growth areas. Current crop yields can only sustain the world's population at subsistence levels, they point out, while nonrenewable energy resources and fresh water supplies are dwindling, and greenhouse gases and other pollutants increase. But while the prognosis is disaster within decades if nothing is done, there are encouraging signs. Technology offers greater efficiency in energy consumption and pollution control, international response to the ozone crisis has been relatively swift, and recycling efforts are gaining headway. The authors warn, however, that the conditions underlying limit ``overshoots''--population growth and resource depletion in a finite world, for example--remain unaddressed in the corridors of power. Modifying the computer-modeling system employed in their first work, the authors graphically depict plausible futures ranging from utter collapse to manageable growth, each depending on the controls used, and they urgently propose a series of general measures that would commence the long-overdue transition to a sustainable global society. An Important and Very Readable Book

This book is a must read for anyone seriously interested in global sustainability. It is clearly written and is easily accessible to non-technical readers. Although based on a sophisticated computer model, the authors avoid presenting a dry, scientific explanation of the simulation -- equations and mathematical formulations are deemphasized. Instead, the authors refer the technically-minded to an earlier book (Dynamics of Growth in a Finite World, available at [...]) that contains every equation used in the model. Moreover, Prof. Meadows makes the model itself available to anyone interested (for a nominal fee).
So read this book. Then, if you want more detail, get the model and technical book.

A brilliant, accessible analysis of our ecological plight

This book contains more common sense, wisdom and compassion than any I've read in many years. It challenges the prevailing paradigm of our society with a perfect balance of head and heart. I borrowed a copy from a friend and I've now come to Amazon to buy my own copy, which I will urge all my friends to read. Another reviewer from Virginia seems to think the book should have been more technical. I think s/he is completely missing the point. This is a book for lay people, which it should be, because if it was full of equations only a handful of geeks would read it and it wouldn't change anything. As it is it's written in beautifully clear prose and you don't need any technical training to follow it.

An old favorite

I grew up with the 1981 edition and I was thrilled when my parents brought it out for my kids. The clear and precise text has a nice flow that is better-suited to reading aloud than most science books. The pictures are humorous and include plenty of women paleontologists, making the 1981 book more modern in that respect at least than many of my sons' newer dino books. But it is special because, among the oodles of kids' dinosaur books out there, this is the one that puts it all into context for me, from the thrill of first Dinosaur discoveries of the mid 1800s ("What finds these were! People crowded into museums to see them...") to how scientists really do have to make educated guesses about how all those bones fit together. I'm delighted to see this still in print.

This is an enjoyable and suitably simple introduction for 6-7 year old children to the topics of dinosaurs and fossils. My class are really enjoying the book and talking about the scenarios and facts!

Just Wicked Enough

The Marquess of Falconridge is forced to sell the last thing he possesses of value, his title. While other English aristocrats may try to woo American heiresses into marriage in order to gain their fortunes, Falconridge chooses another route. He arranges a very private auction with some of America's wealthiest fathers. At auction's end, Falconridge finds himself engaged to Kate Rose.

While Kate's mother may wish her daughter to marry English nobility, Kate wants a marriage based on love. Falconridge knows that love is the one thing he can never give the lovely Miss Rose.

Just Wicked Enough left me with a dreamy smile on my face. Lorraine Heath balances sumptuous sensuality with heart melting romance. Just Wicked Enough is a novel I will surely read again and again.

The hero, Michael, Marquess of Falconridge, is as refreshingly unique as this beautiful love story. I can't recall a hero recently in a historical romance that was so wonderfully strong and so much in need of love. I adored him and I know you will adore Lorraine Heath's Just Wicked Enough!

Just dissapointed

I really thought this book had possibilities but about 100 pages in I still didn't like either of the characters. Both lacked the depth I needed to empathize with their story. Michael was emasculated almost at the beginning. I could suspend my distaste and disbelief of him auctioning himself to the highest bidder. What I couldn't get past was him letting Kate control him with the fact that she had all the control over the money. Maybe it's me but a hero groveling to his wife for every penny is just a big turn off.

Kate was just not a character I could like; her expectations of the marriage were unrealistic and selfish. She wanted him to earn her love but did nothing to earn his. Both characters had secrets that I suppose for the times would have cause a bit of scandal but I just couldn't feel any depth in the secrets or the characters. As the couple began to fall in love with each other I was left wondering why. Towards the end Michael and Kate became a little more tolerable but never did they make me want to cheer them on to happiness.

When I read a book I tend to judge it based on whether the characters and plot still occupy my mind once I have finished the book. Kate and Michael will be easily and quickly forgotten.

shallow spoiled brat

While the plot of the book was interesting enough ( marquess auctions himself to highest bidder for marriage)the character of Kate, the heroine, was awful. She was a shallow, spoiled brat, as well as immature, not overly bright or particularly interesting.

She has left a former husband she claimed to adore because her parents said he was a fortune hunter and anulled the marriage. She marries the marquess because she also wants to have a prominent place in society, but says she wants the love she had with her other lover -so she refuses to sleep with her new husband until he proves he loves her. She does nothing to deserve to be loved, or makes any attempt to endear herself to her new husband. Instead, she holds her family fortune over his head, and throws his reasons for marrying her in his face constantly. Frankly, her own reasons aren't any more praiseworthy - in fact they're less, as at least the marquess has dependants to take care of and is trying to make the best of the situation. Not one of Heath's best.

About the Author
Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi is a world-renowned Islamic scholar of theology, jurisprudence, Prophetic tradition, and a spiritual leader to thousands of Muslims across the globe. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world for the past five years (theMuslim500.com). Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi was born in Damascus in 1963 and trained from an early age in the Islamic sciences by his father, who was an Imam and instructor at the Grand Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. He descends from a scholarly family that traces its lineage back to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Three of his ancestors were also Imams at the Grand Umayyad Mosque. A Sufi Master of the Shadhili Order, his primary focus is on the purification of the heart, the spiritual well being of Muslims, and the rectification of their social conduct and interaction within society based on highest virtues of the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him). He has travelled around the world teaching Muslims, and bringing awareness to and spreading moderate Islam. Thousands of students have studied under him, many of whom are now Imams and teachers in the Islamic World – in the Arab world, the West, the Far East, and South Africa. Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi was one of the first scholars to speak up against the Assad regime and subsequently, against the rise of ISIS, denouncing its atrocities and proving its actions to be un-Islamic. To this end, he has delivered numerous lectures, penned articles, and given several TV and paper interviews to media agencies such as CNN, BBC, and PBS. He is the author of several books in Arabic in the areas of Islamic law and Prophetic Tradition. He speaks Arabic, English, and Swedish, and reads French and German.

Excellent and much needed book written by one of the top scholars of the Muslim world. I also bought the English version of this valuable book. ISIS needs to be fought on different fronts, but most important one is the intellectual front. ISIS can be defeated militarily, but if it's not defeated at the intellectual level, another form of ISIS will emerge.

Excellent read in the Arabic language. It explains in detail why ISIS logic is not Islamic and is the best gift parents can give to their kids to read to protect them. It also comes in English for those born and raised in the West.

Reynosa has laid out an excellent book. Heavily researched and documented. Photos include manufacturing, in use combat photos and detail close-ups. A must for the collector this book has most everything except a quick reference guide to take with you to gun shows and auctions.

I really like this book for its history of the M1 helmet. It has a lot of information that I have not seen in any other place. Pictures are great and most are in color. The section on the marked helmets is good too. Caution with this because you will want to try to get all the variations to complete your collection that you may not even be aware of!

Good for beginners but lacks content, disappointed

Not a bad book. I was expecting a daily program to prepare me to make the transition. Instead there was a generic five day schedule to be repeated for 12 weeks. The Merrell website has something much more comprehensive for free.

There seemed to be a redundant amount of content of what minimal shoes were, what brands and why their good. The book could've been cut in half, and gave just as much info.

Experienced runners will be disappointed, newbs will like it.

I've never been convinced by the arguments for running shoes. This helped me to follow my gut instinct and make the change. I'm in transition without problems.

Over half of the information in this book comes from public sources like job salaries, regional occupational statistics and general discussion.

This book is right on the money and worth every dime of its modest price to the person considering a career change into IT (Information Technology) security. In this easy flowing self-help manual, Mr. McMillan starts by challenging the reader to honestly evaluate themselves in relation to a well defined self-test that can help to determine if network security is a good fit for their personality and preferred lifestyle. As he points out, IT (and especially IT security) isn't for everyone. This is a demanding field that requires a commitment to open-mindedness and self-discipline but the benefits can be numerous. In this book he details those benefits without sugarcoating the committments. Another aspect of this book that I really like is the way in which he explores many of the urban myths concerned with the IT field. Have you been told that you are too old, or too young, or too female, or too unqualified to be given an opportunity in the networking industry? Read what Mr. McMillan says about that, and you may be surprised. Lastly, he tells us, how to get started, how much the training may cost and how to get hired in this highly respected and in-demand field. Give yourself a gift. Read this book and change your life.
