Simple, elegant and very useful

Bennett's writing flows. This little book is poetry and prose, pragmatic and an offering that is nothing short of a tool to remind and awaken. Even when Breathe Into Life is just sitting on the table it works as a reminder to exhale completely and be present. If you've any interest in exploring how "soft skills" like breath awareness become tangible and pragmatic tools with measurable results, you deserve to read this book.

Catherine L. Benamou is Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She was Associate Producer and Senior Research Executive of It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles (Paramount Pictures 1993), and is lead consultant on the It's All True Film Preservation Project currently underway at the UCLA FIlm and Television Archive in Hollywood.

The definitive book about Orson Welles' most misunderstood project

The fact that Catherine L. Benamou's eye-opening and sometimes mind-blowing book about Orson Welles in Latin America happens to be academic shouldn't scare off anyone apart from a few timid anti-intellectuals. There are important discoveries to be found on virtually every page of this book, most of them couched in prose that to my taste goes down far easier than the fuming of "verfoleme" in his own review of this book. Of course you can single out graceless phrases in a good many books (as well as in a good many spiteful Amazon reviews) if that's what you're looking for--but why bother when there's so much to learn here? Benamou's factual nuggets and her critical and political insights place this book so far beyond most studies of Welles in any language, including English, that she radically revises the whole tenor of what scholars and journalists have been writing about "It's All True" for the past 65 years. You might even say that she permanently changes our discourse on the subject, and any scholar who does that deserves our deepest gratitude. And Benamou brings so much background knowledge to bear on the subject--not only about Welles, but also about Brazil and Brazilian culture, Pan-American history and film history--that we'll still be deriving pleasure and edification from this book for many decades to come.

important subject smothered in grotesque prose

"Textophagy"--better like the word, because you'll encounter dozens of such coinages "imbricated" (more fashionable terminology of this ilk) in the author's impenetrable prose: "Just as donning false noses and epidermises allowed Welles to take on significantly different personae while remaining easily recognizable to the public--thereby disclosing the fact of the prothesis to any viewer who had seen him in other performances--his recuperation of the lost work in progress does not involve erasure and forgetting, achieved through the decontextualization and compositional simulation (by way of suturing) of dismembered elements. Instead, it speaks to the reclamation and remembrance by way of bricolage of the text he had originally envisioned." It's the quaint, now antiquated thereobabble (to insert a coinage of my own) of humanities graduate schools in the late 1980s and 1990s. NYU (and the others) can't be entirely blamed for this--Benamou had adequate time to outgrow it in the decade between her 1997 dissertation and the publication of this book. (Also badly needed: a refresher course in the real-life economics of the film industry.) There's deep research behind this effort, and it yields up a wealth of invaluable new information on this pivotal project in Welles' career; let us hope that someone extracts it and blogs it in comprehensible form and that Benamou assents to the process (she holds the copyright): that, plus the reconstruction project of surviving footage she's heading in conjunction with UCLA Film/Television Archive, might turn out to be her most important contributions to Welles scholarship.

About the Author

Simon Rogers is a lecturer in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow, where he teaches a masters-level machine learning course on which this book is based. Dr. Rogers is an active researcher in machine learning, particularly applied to problems in computational biology. His research interests include the analysis of metabolomic data and the application of probabilistic machine learning techniques in the field of human-computer interaction.

Mark Girolami is a chair of statistics and an honorary professor of computer science at University College London, where he is also the director of the Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning. An EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, an IET Fellow, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Dr. Girolami has made major contributions to the field, including his generalisation of independent component analysis, his work on inference in systems biology, and his innovations in statistical methodology.

Not very good

For a book so namely titled it lacks a lot of detailed information. I am very well versed in probability and statistics and still had a hard time following. The author uses notations out of the blue which leaves you feeling like "what just happened here". I bought this book with the hopes of gaining a better understanding but it leaves a lot to be desired. The book's title is very misleading and should be renamed.

Machine Learning begins here

A very good book to finally get my head around Bayesian Learning. As mentioned in the preface, the authors focus on depth rather than breadth. They work out the math in detail for the examples provided. Being machine learning, some background is essential which includes math and programming. Almost all books in this subject require these pre-reqs (at the level expected for a grad level course or senior undergrad).
Strengths:
- Very good order of introducing topics - loss functions, probabilistic view, Bayesian view, etc.
- Detailed working of a few good examples with code also provided for further exploration.
- Introduces linear algebra in parts. In some of the other books, they dive into Linear algebra - positive semi-definite, trace, etc. within no time. Here the authors introduce these concepts gradually, and include sections to highlight why this matters. Matrix notation makes the notations extremely simple, however, if not understood properly, we just see a bunch of symbols like sigma, etc all over the text.
- In addition, another strength I feel is how self contained the book is in terms of explanation. While reading Barber or Murphy (both excellent texts in themselves), I used to get lost pretty quickly and had to look up for additional help on the web before moving on. For this book, I have been able to read chapter after chapter, without having to rush to google every few mins.

With regards to other reviews: The notations were not confusing (atleast to me), the programming with matlab is ok (most of the languages, including python, Lua share similar syntax for matrix manipulations).

I would also mention that I am a grad student and have already taken a couple of machine learning courses. So, it might have been a little easier to go through a "first course" this time around. However, I really found this to be a great text for revision and in general understand the key concepts in this subject area. I also feel that the lack of breadth is not a real concern. As mentioned in another review, if one is able to understand the concepts in this book, they can be carried on to help improve understanding more techniques.
It would have been great to have this as a college text.

For a fast overview of most useful concepts of machine learning

This book is built on a course given at the university. Therefore, do not think to get a thorough and quite outstanding overview of the field like the Barber's or the Bishop's that are excellent. However, at the contrary of other reviews, I find it useful as a refresher. It is concise and sometimes force you to elaborate by yourself to check the formulations, structures well the basics. Not bad at all.

Scarcely had they finished their repast, when there appeared in the air, at a considerable distance, two great clouds. The captain of my ship, knowing by experience what they meant, said they were the male and female parents of the roc, and pressed us to re-embark with all speed, to prevent the misfortune which he saw would otherwise befall us.

The two rocs approached with a frightful noise, which they redoubled when they saw the egg broken, and their young one gone. They flew back in the direction they had come, and disappeared for some time, while we made all the sail we could in the endeavor to prevent that which unhappily befell us.

They soon returned, and we observed that each of them carried between its talons an enormous rock. When they came directly over my ship, they hovered, and one of them let go his rock; but by the dexterity of the steersman it missed us and fell into the sea. The other so exactly hit the middle of the ship as to split it into pieces. The mariners and passengers were all crushed to death or fell into the sea. I myself was of the number of the latter; but, as I came up again, I fortunately caught hold of a piece of the wreck, and swimming, sometimes with one hand and sometimes with the other, but always holding fast the plank, the wind and the tide favoring me, I came to an island, and got safely ashore.

I sat down upon the grass, to recover myself from my fatigue, after which I went into the island to explore it. It seemed to be a delicious garden. I found trees everywhere, some of them bearing green and others ripe fruits, and streams of fresh pure water. I ate of the fruits, which I found excellent; and drank of the water, which was very light and good.
