Sense and Insanity

I first discovered Richard Daughty, writing as "The Mogambo Guru," in 2006. Mr. Daughty is a reasonable, personable man, a successful businessman, and a very bright economist.
His alter-ego, the Mogambo, is a paranoid nut-case who manages to do everything wrong: at home, at work, and (when not in police custody) in public. He manages to offend and infuriate all those around him with his spot-on analysis of economic and fiscal events delivered as obnoxiously as possible.
Buy the Economica Mogambo for the superb run-on sentences and the head-snapping non sequiturs. Stick around for the brilliant analysis.
Never has "The Dismal Science" been presented in such a humorous fashion.
Disclaimer: While I've never met or communicated in any way with the Mogambo, I live within howitzer range of his Bunker of Doom. Just saying...

I really liked this book. I have tried to collect every article by the Mogambo that I could find on line and here were many of them all collected in one volume. The only way that the book couuld have been better would have been if it had been "Economica Mogambo: The Complete Works" (or perhaps "The Complete Mogambo").

Wayne Mack lives in Pretoria, South Africa, where he serves as a pastor-elder with his son-in-law and teaches biblical counseling at Strengthening Ministries Training Institute to pastors and aspiring pastors in the region. He also spends about six weeks in the USA teaching at various churches. He and his wife, Carol, have four adult children and numerous grandchildren.

Joshua Mack (M.A. in biblical counseling, The Master's College; M.Div., The Master's Seminary; D.Min., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is pastor-teacher of Living Hope Church in Pretoria, South Africa, and Executive Director of 1Hope Ministries International. He and his wife Marda have five daughters as well as two boys and one girl in permanent foster care. He is the co-author of Courage and God's Solution to Life's Problems. Deeply Challenging!

As I read Humility by Wayne Mack I could not help but draw comparisons with C.J. Mahaney's excellent book by the same title. I am glad to say that both books are deeply challenging and saturated in Scripture. Both men are skilled expositors of Scripture and both have a heart for the church. While I will go so far as to recommend both of these books I do not wish to make further comparison between them as each stands on its own merits.

"This book was written," says Mack, "in an attempt to understand pride and humility from a biblical perspective and to help us diminsh the destructive pride factor and to increase the true humility factor in our lives." To do this the author uses a "four-D" approach. He begins with biblical definitions of pride and humility and then discusses how pride and humility display themselves. Finally, he explains how true humility can be developed and destructive pride can be diminished in the life of the believer.

The importance of this topic can hardly be overstated. The Scriptures make it clear to us that humility is an exceedingly important aspect of the Christian's character. The Bible continually exhorts God's people to be humble and to rid ourselves of all pride. We are often told that God pours out his blessing on those who display a humble heart. Pride strikes right to the heart of God as it is a proclamation on the part of a person that he considers his concerns to be more important than submission to his Creator. "Pride consists in attributing to ourselves the honor, privileges, prerogatives, rights and power that are due to God alone. Thus, it is the very root and essence of sin because pride, at its core, is idolatry of self. A proud person has put himself or herself in God's place."

Humility stands exactly opposed to pride. "Humility consists in an attitude wherein we recognize our own insignificance and unworthiness before God and attribute to Him the supreme honor, praise, prerogatives, rights, privileges, worship, devotion, authority, submission, and obedience that He alone deserves... It means having a servant's mind-set and always putting self last."

At the conclusion of each chapter is a set of questions of application and sometimes a self-evaluation. While I generally eschew this type of evaluation and have often found them to be somewhat less than useful, I found the questions in Humility to be challenging and relevant to the topic. They were a welcome addition and added significant value to the book.

While I enjoyed the book tremendously there were two areas that I considered negative. First, the author's definition of pride did not seem to allow for any level of pride whatsoever. Is there anything inherently evil with feeling proud of, for example, one's child? I would not think so, provided that one acknowledge his own and his child's dependence on God. Yet I am not sure that this would fit within Mack's definition of pride. He says also of humility that "As soon as we think we are humble, we're not; as soon as we think we have it, we've lost it." I am not entirely sure that this is the case. If a man may acknowledge other gifts given to him by God, could he not also acknowledge his own humility? Secondly, while I appreciate the usefulness and even necessity of reading the contributions of great Christians of days past, I felt that Mack may have relied a little too much on their writing. For example, the book concludes with fully five pages of an excerpt of one of Charles Spurgeon's sermons.

These are but small complaints. I enjoyed Humility and, far more importantly, was continually challenged and edified in reading it. Just days after reading the book I can already attest to some changes I have made and will continue to make in my life because of what I learned through its pages. Because of the importance of the topic this is a book that will benefit all who read its pages. I recommend that you do so!

The book focuses on the lost art of humility, one that can never be overstated too much, or repeated enough. To use an example, to continually speak of the fruit of virtue, but decline to ever apologize, seek repentance or ask forgiveness when one transgresses against his brothers, are indications of sure-footed pride.

The battle against pride is one we all should take up - repentance is surely the most sure way of dealing with this?

Dr Mack writes that as a witness to pagan kings of God's sovereignty, Daniel's greatest service was to point out the excessive pride of King Nebuchadnezzar, and reveal God's coming judgment upon it. pp. 100-3

Essential to read

The best and only good book on humility. I've searched on Amazon for a long time before I found this book. The author is a pastor
in a church.
He really explores humility and pride in depth. He's very thorough. Examples of pride: a violent, argumentative, or critical person.
He identifies ways you can be prideful that I've never thought of, and then presents ways you can develop humility in yourself.
Important that every Christian read and apply this book. The book is just that good.

this book sucks!!

this book sucks!!! my child hates it and it doesn't have good examples to model and it seems unorganized. Buy Mc Graw Hill book for 6th grade math common core. This is the book they choose to use at West Middle in Hazelwood School District, no wonder the kids are struggling

About the Author
Theodore R. Herazy has been in private practice for over 40 years, holding two separate licenses - as a chiropractic physician and a board-certified acupuncturist. He has taught acupuncture on the post-graduate level for several years, and worked in multi-disciplinary medical holistic practices for most of his career. It was while he was working in the world-famous Pioneer Medical Clinic that he developed Peyronie's disease. Since no effective medical treatment for Peyronie's disease exists, he worked with his medical colleagues to develop an Alternative Medicine treatment program to treat his problem. Thus began an educational and personal odyssey that eventually resulted in Dr. Herazy starting the Peyronie's Disease Institute and authoring two books about PD. Dr. Herazy is married to Patricia, whom he has known since kindergarten, and is the father of three and grandfather of six. He studies martial arts, and frequently gets lost in the kitchen while cooking for hours.

Disappointing

There is virtually no information in print on Peyronie's Disease, a debilitating disease with a significant negative effects on the quality of life of (probably) millions of middle-aged men. I find this amazing that no one has tried to fill this obvious gap in medical knowledge.

When I saw Herazy's book, I thought this was a great first step into legitimizing alternative therapies for treatment. What I found instead was a disappointing and extended discussion of everything EXCEPT the oral vitamin supplementation therapies used to treat the disease. It became quickly obvious that this book is a weak attempt to promote a supplement called Neprinol and an associated website.

Most of what took 162 pages to publish could have been covered in 10-20 pages. The rest is an amateurish discourse on lifestyle which may or may not have anything to do with Peyronies, and which anyone, even with no medical credentials, could write.

If Herazy really wants to help men deal with this disease, rather than make a quick buck, he should make an honest effort to sit down and try again, covering specific supplement treatments, looking at medical studies and decoding them for those of us who are not doctors.

Unfortunately this field is full of get-rich-quick types, and right now, Herazy comes across as one of these people. Don't waste your money on this book. You can find more information of better quality on the Internet for free.

Sensitive and Thoughful

I enjoyed reading this author's account of his own struggle with PD and the hope he brings to other sufferers of this non-lethal disease. Theodore Herazy brings sense and sensibility to a problem up to 10% of the male population deals with sometime in their lifetime. This is an astounding statistic given the lack of understanding and treatment options offered by conventional medicine. Dr. Herazy helps to demystify Peyronie's disease and offers a comprehensive look at how to approach it from a holistic perspective. He breaks down the most mundane aspects of how a male handles his penis to insure that no further injury occurs as one progresses towards a cure as well as how to make the necessary life style changes that will support this process. There is also a free website that offers more background information and details on the supplement regime he recommends so there is ample support for those who wish to dig deeper. This book can stand alone or be a good first look at how to cope with and begin the healing process from this dreaded disease.

Disappointing

I like this author, but if I hadn't gotten it for free on kindle unlimited I'd be disappointed. It's really short, no bdsm...and no "taleS". Don't know why the book's called Naughty Tales if there's only ONE tale. Heck, half the book volume is a teaser for another of her books.

The authors present a thorough and detailed analysis of the production of Roman armor in the first and second centuries C.E. They examine torso armor, helmets, leg and arm armor, and shields. The authors clearly show that the Romans had a highly sophisticated understanding of metal working and even produced low slag iron and steel, which modern scholars and metallurgists can not explain. Modern low slag iron and steel were not produced until the invention of machine powered rollers in the 19th century. Clearly we still have much to learn about the ancient Romans.

This book is an awesome scholarly work on the production and distribution of Armour in Imperial Rome. It highlights the economy of the military machine that was Rome. Having said that, this is not a book to purchase for general information on Rome.

Jay Ingram is an award-winning science author, writer, and broadcaster. He was co-host and producer of Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet from 1995 to 2011, and he is the author of eleven previous books. He lives in Alberta, Canada.

Important book about a complex problem that has broad implications

Great book, and easy to follow. It covers some complex science, but the author does a good job of introducing the concepts of protein chemistry ahead of time. This makes it easy to follow, and even a non-scientist can follow the lingo. The level is about that of a Scientific American article, but book-length. If you want to understand the background behind a very important medical problem (one that will be critical in the future), pick this book up.

Great book, too bad about title

Excellent coverage of a serious emerging topic. As an outdoor writer struggling to understand CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease, a TSE specific to deer species), and how to communicate with the my readers about them, I have found Fatal Flaws to be an excellent resource.

Unfortunately with the title including nothing about the topic - the word "Prion" prion being absent from the title and subtitle, in fact occurring exactly zero times on the outside of the jacket - I worry that some people looking for information on the topic might miss it.

A good book on "The story of the revolutionary science that is unraveling the mysteries of mad cow and other fatal brain diseases." It also contains some interesting comments on Stanley Prusiner.

From "Chemical Evolution," (1991) by Stephen F. Mason: page 251- on prions "... the traditional prebiotic (the study of the chemical origins of living organisms) protein worlds retain their place, now as possible precursors of the more elaborate nucleic acid epoch."

If any of these categories fit, you MUST read this book:

1. Parents with children playing American football or hockey- head trauma and concussions leading to "dementia" like symptoms; Chapter 23- "Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy: The Athletes' Plague,"

2. Hunters eating wild game- the spread "diseased prions" to wild game; Chapter 17- "Into the Wild: Deer, Elk, Moose and Caribou."

From the book "Prion Protein Protocols," (2008), edited by Andrew F. Hill, Ph.D, Humana Press, page 253:
"Although the natural route of CWD (Chronic wasting disease) transmission is unknown, lateral transmission (cite) via ingestion of forage or water contaminated by secretions, excretions, or other sources, for example, CWD-infected carcasses (cite), is the most plausible natural route. Long thought to be limited in the wild to a relatively small endemic area in northeastern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming, and southwestern Nebraska, the disease has since been found in states east of the Mississippi in free-ranging deer in Wisconsin (cite), Illinois, New York, and West Virginia, and in the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta."
" ... to show that skeletal muscles of CWD-infected deer harbor infectious prions, demonstrating that humans consuming or handling meat from CWD-infected animals are at risk to prion exposure (cite)."

3. Eating of non-100% grass fed beef. The risk of exposure to "diseased prions" in beef is reduced by eating only 100% grass-fed cattle (Note: this information is not from this book). Although see #2 above re: the spread of CWD.

This book also contains an alarming account of the British governments lack of a response to the BSE (mad-cow) in British cattle until it was a crisis in the late 1980's, and talks about a "cover-up."

This is case is relevant to Mr. Ingram's book in that the main issue as presented in the court case was the humane treatment of "downer" cows and pigs in a cull-cow slaughter plant in Chino, California. See www.humanesociety.org/news/blog/2011/11/supreme_court_downers_11092011.html

The U.S. Supreme Court Case came from the U.S. Court of Apeals for the Ninth Circuit, Primary Citation 599 F.3d. 1093 (C.A.9 (Cal.), 2010- see www. animallaw.info/case/ national-assn-v-brown. This opinion contains much more information and should be read; and upheld the California law (which be the way was a change of the Cal Penal Code by the State Legislature). The U.S. Supreme Court reversed and sided with the Meat Association on the grounds that Federal Law trumps State (California) Law on the same issues.

In these court opinions there is no mention at all of prions or of the disease of prion proteins or of "mad cow" et. al. This case dealt with "downer" animals, which in the U.K. has caused a crisis, and leads directly to the disease of prion proteins, yet the Courts do not discuss this issue. The disease of Prion proteins is a national, worldwide public health issue.
The U.S. Supreme Court decided this case on the technicalities of Federal law trumping State law on the same issue and no mention at all was made of any Prion disease or "Mad Cow" disease is made in the U.S. Supreme Court decision or in the U.S. Court of Apeals for the Ninth Circuit decision.

There is a "Note and Comment" by Shelly Barron entitled "California's Continued Struggle Against Nonambulatory Animal Slaughter and the Limits of Federal Preemption: 'National Meat Association v. Brown.'" Note: this article was written before the U.S. Supreme Court decision but Ms. Barron does comment on the Supreme Court decision by Justice Kagan in the Conclusion of the article. In my limited search for law review articles on this case this was the only article I could find! (No California law schools seems to want to tackle this issue- but maybe I just missed them).
