Sophie Halart is an art historian specializing in contemporary Latin American art. She is currently completing her PhD on contemporary women artists in the Southern Cone at University College London. She has been a Graduate Teaching Assistant at University College London and a Visiting Teaching Fellow at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Santiago de Chile.

Mara Polgovsky is a Teaching Assistant at the University of Cambridge, where she received her PhD in Latin American Cultural Studies.

Useful MUST-HAVE for any teacher AND a great, easy read

This book exceeded my expectations. I'm a graduate student getting my Masters -- M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. I ordered this book because I HAD TO for a class (the class was Teaching for Cross Cultural Communication). BUT I soon realized that this is a must have for my own personal collection! Any teacher worth their weight and who genuinely cares about making sure they are teaching in an inclusive manner and that all students are a part of what is being taught, making sure all students -- from varying races, cultures, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, abilities, etc. -- can not only see but feel that they and their families/interests are a part of the everyday classroom curriculum should own this book. I've been teaching for 6 years and have focused, as most teachers do, on the academic/social/emotional well-being and growth of my students. This book showed me what has been missing from my teaching and it caused me to change the way I teach. Now I still do what I did before BUT I also add elements from this book to ensure I'm recognizing diversity and other cultures.
Another bonus -- this book READS LIKE A GOOD BOOK! Does not at all read like a boring scholarly regurgitation of facts. GREAT EASY READ.

Warning, Too graphic re: adultery

This book is used in our Parrish's CCD program. While flipping through the book I noticed the chapter on the 6th Commandment, Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery, was very graphic. It went into a bunch of descriptions of things such as polygamy, homosexuality, masturbation, prostitution, rape, etc. This was way too much information for my child, and therefore I did not share it with them. Depending on what your child's knowledge is on such topics, this could be too much and invoke a loss of innocence. Just wanted to warn others before purchasing so you know what you are getting into. I hope this helps.

Okay Book

I purchased this book because I wanted specific activities I could use in my primary classroom. Half of the book's content was persuasion on why it was important to use various learning styles. I did not need to be persuaded so this was a waste for me. There are a few pages that will benefit my classroom, but not the majority of the book. If you're looking for a Silver & Strong book that will be useful, try their "Tools for Promoting Active, Indepth Learning". It's much better than this one.
