Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious, by David Dark

For many of us, the word "religious" immediately evokes thoughts of brainwashing, violence and eye-rubbingly tiresome conversations. Why not be done with it? David Dark argues that it's not that simple. The ease with which we put the label on others without applying it to ourselves is an evasion, a way of avoiding awareness of our own messy allegiances. Dark writes: "If what we believe is what we see is what we do is who we are, there's no getting away from religion." Both incisive and entertaining, Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious combines Dark's keen powers of cultural observation with candor and wit. With equal parts memoir and analysis, Dark persuasively argues that the fact of religion is the fact of relationship. It's the shape our love takes, the lived witness of everything we're up to for better or worse, because witness knows no division. Looking hard at our weird religious background (Dark maintains we all have one) can bring the actual content of our everyday existence―the good, the bad and the glaringly inconsistent―to fuller consciousness. By doing so, we can more practically envision an undivided life and reclaim the idea of being "religious."

Review
"David Dark is one of our most astute and necessary cultural critics. His work gracefully opens new doors of understanding and breaks down barriers between secular and non-, and it puts a lot of old mythology out to pasture with a daring affirmation at the heart of his radical critique. Life's Too Short refreshingly ropes everyone in, insisting that we're all in it together. We forget that." (Jessica Hopper, author of The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic)

"Effectively skewering a central fallacy of the age, David Dark argues that at the deepest level no one is more or less religious than anyone else. With his premise granted, new avenues for ownership, responsibility and a renewed attentiveness to all we say, do and think arise. Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious is a call to consciousness and the compassion that accompanies the sacred insight that the whole world is kin and everything belongs." (Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New Mexico)

"Brace yourself. Our bold conceits, wishful thinking and soothing sobriquets on the abolition of religion and the end of faith are set on a collision course thanks to David Dark's luminous reckonings with the real. The result is a shock of recognition: life more abundant awaits us only in the deep immersions of togetherness with others. Here alone are the comedy and chaos that define the human condition and lead us gently or not into the strange new world of grace. Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious is an irresistible triumph." (Charles Marsh, Commonwealth Professor of Religious Studies, University of Virginia, author of Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer)

"Don't let an aversion toward that radioactive word dissuade you. Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious is a bracing manifesto for modern people and an optimism-infused love song to humanity. David Dark calls us to pay better, more generous attention to our own lives and the lives of others." (Sara Zarr, National Book Award finalist, author of The Lucy Variations)

"Prepare to have idols smashed. David Dark renders futile the cherished modern ambition to opt out of human religiosity; religion, rather, is a road we can make by walking with open eyes and informed minds. No marvels of progress can save us from being heretics and holy fools, or prophets, seers and miracle workers. Dark helps us recognize these characters (and more) on the radio, in a dreary parking lot and within ourselves." (Nathan Schneider, columnist for America magazine, author of God in Proof and Thank You, Anarchy)

"David Dark is one of the most important prophetic voices of our day. Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious is another beautiful demonstration of the winsome way in which he unsettles our language and our imagination. Not content to unravel the basic fabric of our existence, Dark reweaves the fibers into a rich and vibrant vision of the flourishing religious life for which we were created." (C. Christopher Smith, coauthor of Slow Church and founding editor of The Englewood Review of Books)

"I am so very grateful for this book, which, among other things, demonstrates that answering 'Jedi' or 'Toni Morrison' when asked for your religious affiliation is a perfectly legitimate response to that question―thereby arguing us into another definition of what it means to be alive to wonder and mystery. And at a time in our culture when we seem to prefer our 'dialogues' to be conducted behind well-defended barricades from which we lob Twitter grenades, David Dark shows us that there could be another way to live with each other and speak with each other. Each sentence here is graced with a wisdom, humor and humility that can't help but inspire us to be a little less suspicious of each other and to hope a little bit more―and if that isn't a rare gift of prophecy, I don't know what is. Also, he writes like an unprintable word, and for that I am glad." (Carlene Bauer, author of Frances and Bernard and Not That Kind of Girl)

"Dark's work is a valuable resource for youth workers who are facing questions from students about agnosticism or are struggling to deal with apathy in today's youth culture." (Katie Mussat, Youthworker, Fall 2016)

"David Dark has a request for all of us. Stop thinking of being religious as passivity. Stop thinking of it as participation in something monolithic, intractable and stagnated by centuries of routine. In his new book, he asks us instead to find religion all around us: in music, television, books and film. In doing so, he reimagines being religious as a collective action open to all and demonstrates that in a time skeptical of religion, it can be a source of meaningful work and lifegiving pleasure and joy―and even of change." (Kaya Oakes, College Writing Programs, University of California, Berkeley)

"With candor and humor, (Dark) synthesizes a broad range of cultural voices alongside his own 'attention collection' of personal influences to create an argument against the thought that we can escape religion. . . . Through references to science fiction novels, Wendell Berry, Thomas Merton, and Daniel Berrigan, Dark sheds light on how thoughts are handed down to us, what we judge to be essential, and the ways in which we can begin to unlearn all that we have unwittingly inherited. Dark's argument couched in a memoir is a persuasive, well-grounded case for religion's place in modern society." (Publishers Weekly, December 14, 2015)

"While not a novel or sectarian position, it is refreshing that this approach comes from an avowed Christian. Anyone who wishes to get beyond the acrimony between believers and secularists will appreciate Dark's narrative, even if they wonder whether religion differentiates good from bad." (James Wetherbee, Library Journal, May 1, 2016)

"In an age with 'religion' is often viewed as a dirty word, author and theologian David Dark wants to reclain the term. Through storytelling and accessible prose, Dark deconstructs negative connotations of religion as well as common assumptions about a divide between the secular and sacred." (Covenant Companion, July/August 2016)

"Dark has given us a book that is beautiful and timely, one that initiates a vital public conversation about the nature of religion and its benefits. I suspect many of those who identify as 'spiritual but not religious' would discover a winsome conversation partner, even if they do not agree with the way he defines all his terms. Because of its conversational nature, Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious begs to be read and discussed in churches, coffee shops, homes, and libraries across North America. . . . Dark has given us a compelling and meaningful understanding of how religion can lead to a more connected life of flourishing. And I'm not ashamed―indeed, I'm delighted―to wave that banner in the public square." (C. Christopher Smith, Christianity Today, February 8, 2016)

"[Dark] writes with humor and wit about our 'weird' religious backgrounds and our need to develop a 'language of love' based on sharing the things that are most important to us. Saying to someone 'I think you might like this' becomes a way of letting them know they have been seen, that we share common interests, and that we welcome their participation in something we hold sacred. Religion so handled is presented as a potent means of overcoming our isolation and building and sustaining community." (Foreword, Spring 2016)

"Dark suggests that religion is the way people see themselves―who they are and what they do. Religion shapes people's thoughts and lives. Religion gets passed down from generation-to-generation through thoughts and stories. Dark shares personal stories from his own life to study our ideas of what religion is. He will open readers' minds to perhaps a new way of thinking about religion." (Ruth O'Neil, CBA Retailers+Resources, February 2016)

"Having just finished David Dark's new book, I want to buy stock in Religion Unlimited, meaning that David helps us see why pronouncing religion dead or dying is terribly short-sighted. The writing is muscular yet graceful, and the content is wise and insightful. You couldn't ask more from a book . . . and you couldn't ask for a more important subject." (Brian D. McLaren, author, speaker, activist)

As an atheist, I can appreciate...
By Amazon Customer
I'm a former evangelical Christian minister, now atheist/humanist. I celebrate what I think is the net affect of this book--it puts tools in the minds of its reader to find common ground with those we've previously otherized, to expand the space of the talk-aboutable, and to elevate humility and empathy. I interviewed Dark on the 90th episode of the podcast Everyone's Agnostic, which I named after a phrase I borrowed from another of his books, "The Sacredness of Questioning Everything." Dark's genius is so good for what is ailing us.

... profound commentary on contemporary religious culture in such a beautifully written form
By Frank
Rarely have I read such a profound commentary on contemporary religious culture in such a beautifully written form. By turns humorous, deeply serious, whimsical, and philosophical, Dark's book is a powerful reflection on the inescapability of "ultimate issues," even in an increasingly relativistic culture. The book is ideal Lenten reading, joining in my mind works like Kathleen Norris's and Marilynne Robinson's in prompting a turn to soulfulness--to what really matters.

sacred responsibility to eschew over-simplification in order to see and better understand ourselves and others
By Matthew Ryan Ward
“We’re in the presence of a catastrophically unexamined concept.”

There may not be a more desperately needed discussion at this moment than what David Dark attempts to invoke here. "Life's Too Short..." is an invitation for honesty and empathy – a call to a, dare I say, sacred responsibility to eschew over-simplification in order to see and better understand ourselves and others, thoughtfully. Those who take objection to Dark's choice of "religion" to name our worldviews, mythologies and devotions (recognized or unrecognized), say far more about themselves than the author's intent. You 'gotta serve somebody', and you can't exit culture. As Dark says, "We're all in it." So the subject of religion, of our religion(s), doesn't have to be a label or a dead end, but rather a perpetual opportunity for conversation and self-examination, and ultimately for love.

Amazon.com Review
Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech's Love That Dog, a funny, sweet, original short novel written in free verse, introduces us to an endearingly unassuming, straight-talking boy who discovers the powers and pleasures of poetry. Against his will. After all, "boys don't write poetry. Girls do." What does he say of the famous poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"? "I think Mr. Robert Frost / has a little / too / much / time / on his / hands." As his teacher, Ms. Stretchberry, introduces the canon to the class, however, he starts to see the light. Poetry is not so bad, it's not just for girls, and it's not even that hard to write. Take William Carlos Williams, for example: "If that is a poem / about the red wheelbarrow / and the white chickens / then any words / can be a poem. / You've just got to / make / short / lines." He becomes more and more discerning as the days go by, and readers' spirits will rise with Jack's as he begins to find his own voice through his own poetry and through that of others. His favorite poem of all is a short, rhythmic one by Walter Dean Myers called "Love That Boy" (included at the end of the book with all the rest of Ms. Stretchberry's assignments). The words completely captivate him, reminding him of the loving way his dad calls him in the morning and of the way he used to call his yellow dog, Sky. Jack's reverence for the poem ultimately leads to meeting the poet himself, an experience he will never forget.

This winning, accessible book is truly remarkable in that Creech lets us witness firsthand how words can open doors to the soul. And this from a boy who asks, "Why doesn't the person just / keep going if he's got / so many miles to go / before he sleeps?" (Ages 8 to 12) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
Wolf's (Party of Five) bright, boyish voice brings to life Creech's novel-in-free-verse about a student's enlightening year of course work. As school starts in September, Jack is not eager to embark on Miss Stretchberry's poetry writing assignments. "I don't want to/ because boys/ don't write poetry./ Girls do." But Jack's attitude soon changes. As Miss Stretchberry reads the works of great poets (Robert Frost, Valerie Worth, William Blake) to the class and encourages Jack's writing efforts, Jack discovers his unique voice--and a true talent for creative expression. The culmination of Jack's great year is a classroom visit from Mr. Walter Dean Myers, who wrote what Jack considers "the best best BEST/ poem/ ever," called "Love That Boy," a selection that has become the boy's biggest inspiration. Wolf plays Jack with a realistic, respectful and contemporary tone. He nimbly conveys surprise, wonder and heartfelt emotion without sounding sentimental or affected, a quality that will have many young listeners enthralled. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-Jack keeps a journal for his teacher, a charming, spare free-verse monologue that begins: "I don't want to/because boys/don't write poetry./Girls do." But his curiosity grows quickly as Miss Stretchberry feeds the class a varied menu of intriguing poems starting with William Carlos Williams's "The Red Wheelbarrow," which confuses Jack at first. Gradually, he begins to see connections between his personal experiences and the poetry of William Blake, Robert Frost, and others, and Creech's compellingly simple plot about love and loss begins to emerge. Jack is timid about the first poems he writes, but with the obvious encouragement and prodding of his masterful teacher, he gains the courage to claim them as his own in the classroom displays. When he is introduced to "Love That Boy" by Walter Dean Myers, he makes an exuberant leap of understanding. "MARCH 14/That was the best best BEST/poem/you read yesterday/by Mr. Walter Dean Myers/the best best BEST/poem/ever./I am sorry/I took the book home/without asking./I only got/one spot/on it./That's why/the page is torn./I tried to get/the spot/out." All the threads of the story are pulled together in Jack's final poem, "Love That Dog (Inspired by Walter Dean Myers)." Creech has created a poignant, funny picture of a child's encounter with the power of poetry. Readers may have a similar experience because all of the selections mentioned in the story are included at the end. This book is a tiny treasure.

Troop Thoughts on a Summer Book
By Lori Z
Kimberly’s Book Review

The book Love That Dog is about Jack, Sky, and poetry. Jack likes the short poems the best, and so do I. Jack loves his dog named Sky. [Spoiler alert] I don’t like it when Sky never wakes up again because it makes me feel sad. Sky is cute, yellow, and drools a lot. That’s the part I like the most. I am 7 years old. I would recommend this book to 6 year old kids and older.

Lauren’s book review
This book is about a little boy named Jack. He learns to read and write poems at school but thinks they are for girls not boys. After reading some poems he starts to like poetry and writes a poem about his yellow dog.
I am 8 years old and I liked this book. It was easy to read. I liked it because it is emotional and funny at the same time. Any age can read this book.

Carolyn’s Book Review

The book Love That Dog is full of poems. It’s a really good book. Jack is a boy. He talked about his yellow dog named Sky. [Spoiler Alert] Sky was run over by a blue, muddy car. It makes me sad a little. I like this book because Jack’s yellow dog is cute. I also like how he did his poem that was shaped like Sky. It’s a medium sized book. I am 9 and I’d highly recommend this book to 1st grade students and up.

Katelyn’s Book Review:

I really liked the book Love That Dog. I liked it because it told a really good story about Jack’s life and his dog Sky. In the beginning I did not like it, I thought it was boring. But then it got very interesting and I wanted to keep reading it forever. I really liked that it was funny and sad at the same time. Sharon Creech made poems really funny and enjoyable to read. I really loved Love That Dog.

BEST KID'S BOOK EVER
By Amazon Customer
My child came home from school completely enamored by this book. When I read it with him, I was hooked as well. I'm not a professional reviewer like so many others here, but I am a mom who has read countless books with her kids. And this one is outstanding. What I love about this book is that it covertly introduces poetry to kids. And it hooks them by introducing them to what I'm going to call "mind benders" like "The Red Wheelbarrow." It's also written like a response journal. I'm so thrilled that the dots are not connected here, that you have to think and infer and create the missing parts of the narrative. I also love that it introduces poetry to kids in a non-threatening way. (The main character doesn't understand some poems and writes "honestly" about that in his journal.) I found my child completely agreeing -- what DOES the poem about the red wheelbarrow and the white chickens mean??? The author brilliantly includes the poems she references (the back of the book) so you can read them while/after reading the book itself. I cannot say enough great things about this book.

Stretch for the Stars
By Ohioan
This book, told entirely in free verse, from the point of view of a grade-school boy named Jack, is on the surface about how his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, introduces the whole class to poetry and asks them to write a poem. Each day, it seems. Jack resists, at first saying that poetry is for girls, not boys. Jack's voice is wonderful: he asks, he questions, he points out contradictions, and, slowly, he reveals his feelings. All in wonderful, simple yet deep free verse. When the class is asked to write a poem about a pet they've had, Jack resists writing about his dog. It's too painful. But slowly, through poetry, he reveals how much he loved his dog and what happened to it. And doing so helps Jack cope with his loss.

This is a book to be read and enjoyed again and again: you'll see and appreciate different things with each reading. And, you will especially appreciate teachers who introduce children to poetry.

The Atlas of Global Inequalities, by Ben Crow, Suresh K. Lodha

Drawing on research from around the world, this atlas gives shape and meaning to statistics, making it an indispensable resource for understanding global inequalities and an inspiration for social and political action. Inequality underlies many of the challenges facing the world today, and The Atlas of Global Inequalities considers the issue in all its dimensions. Organized in thematic parts, it maps not only the global distribution of income and wealth, but also inequalities in social and political rights and freedoms. It describes how inadequate health services, unsafe water, and barriers to education hinder people’s ability to live their lives to the full; assesses poor transport, energy, and digital communication infrastructures and their effect on economic development; and highlights the dangers of unclean and unhealthy indoor and outdoor environments. Through world, regional, and country maps, and innovative and intriguing graphics, the authors unravel the complexity of inequality, revealing differences between countries as well as illustrating inequalities within them.

Topics include: the discrimination suffered by children with a disability; the impact of inefficient and dangerous household fuels on the daily lives and long-term health of those who rely on them; the unequal opportunities available to women; and the reasons for families’ descent into, and reemergence from, poverty.

Hybridity: Limits, Transformations, Prospects (Suny Series, Explorations in Postcolonial Studies), by Anjali Prabhu

This critical engagement with some of the most prominent contemporary theorists of postcolonial studies reevaluates recent theories of hybridity and agency. Challenging the claim that hybridity provides a site of resistance to hegemonic and homogenizing forces in an increasingly globalized world, Anjali Prabhu pursues the ways in which hybridity plays out in the Creole, postcolonial societies of Mauritius and La Reunion, two small islands in the Indian Ocean, and offers an introduction to the literature and culture of this lesser-known region of Francophonie. She also reconsiders two major theorists from the Francophone context, Edouard Glissant and Frantz Fanon, through a provocatively Marxian framing that reveals these two writers shared more in common about agency and society than has previously been recognized."

Review
This remarkable contribution to debates about the relations between hybridity and society in postcolonial studies will make a dramatic impact on the field. Nowhere have the notions of hybridity and diaspora been discussed so thoroughly. It will be very useful as both a productive theoretical resource and an instrument for teaching and should be of interest to scholars and students in literary studies, anthropology, history, and social theory. Ato Quayson, author of Calibrations: Reading for the Social
While the field of postcolonial studies is by no means new, and varying readings and interpretations of its core concepts of hybridity and metissage have been added to the literature over time, few have done so in such length, breadth, and depth, problematizing competing sets of current approaches to critical theory and drawing on the resulting conclusions to stage new readings of fiction and criticism from a variety of geographical locations. The caliber of the writing and the analysis make this book a welcome and necessary addition to the canon of postcolonial criticism. Adlai Murdoch, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign"

Blowdown is the story of a man's reluctant journey guided by the mutual love and respect for his ninety-five year old grandmother. William, an attractive middle aged gay man and post-AIDS era survivor, travels from Vancouver, British Columbia to Palm Springs, California, to visit his dying grandmother. He is both unaware and unwilling to participate in the introspective voyage she has planned for him as her last hurrah. Her surprise confession of a decades-old family secret leads to her own unexpected redemption and endows her with the authority to issue increasingly extreme and bizarre challenges designed to liberate William. Through this remarkable relationship and because of other quirky characters that he encounters along the way, William is forced to take a startling look at the demons that have haunted him for many years. Blowdown, with its subtle plot and fascinating characters, paints the picture of a man dealing with the pain of loss, and the surprising conclusion that results as his hiding places are stripped away. Blowdown is not only a must-read for the GLBT community, it is a novel that is important to anyone who has experienced loss and self doubt.

Secrets, confessions, death, liberation
By Norman Abramson
This beautifully written book reveals how awaiting the death of a loved one can be a time during which one can be healed and liberated from the burden of harboring secrets and long standing resentments. It can be a time when epiphanies are had and a time of new beginnings. The author takes us on such a journey with William, a middle aged gay man who fears that his chances for romance have past and that excitement and passion are unattainable. As he stands the death watch he encounters others who have tried to resolve such issues in their own unique ways. The book easily sustains the reader's interest in delving into the unresolved issues of the protagonists but also adds

Impressive debut
By JB
This first novel by Graham MacFie, is by turns hilarious, informative, and ultimately moving. While by no means a "gay novel" per se,it throws a significant light on the consequences of surviving the scourge of AIDS at it's worth in the 1980's and 90's. While so doing "Blowdown" makes trenchant observations about the current state of gay life in a sometimes screamingly funny and always astute way. The major thrust of the book however is the story of the protagonist and the touching and loving relationship he has with his grandmother, who's last days precipitate the action of the novel. I highly recommend this book.

The Sun in the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories, by J. L. Heilbron

Between 1650 and 1750, four Catholic churches were the best solar observatories in the world. Built to fix an unquestionable date for Easter, they also housed instruments that threw light on the disputed geometry of the solar system, and so, within sight of the altar, subverted Church doctrine about the order of the universe.

A tale of politically canny astronomers and cardinals with a taste for mathematics, The Sun in the Church tells how these observatories came to be, how they worked, and what they accomplished. It describes Galileo's political overreaching, his subsequent trial for heresy, and his slow and steady rehabilitation in the eyes of the Catholic Church. And it offers an enlightening perspective on astronomy, Church history, and religious architecture, as well as an analysis of measurements testing the limits of attainable accuracy, undertaken with rudimentary means and extraordinary zeal. Above all, the book illuminates the niches protected and financed by the Catholic Church in which science and mathematics thrived.

Superbly written, The Sun in the Church provides a magnificent corrective to long-standing oversimplified accounts of the hostility between science and religion.

Amazon.com Review
The Sun in the Church by J.L. Heilbron is a provocative work of scholarship that challenges long-held views of the relationship between science and Christianity. Heilbron's main point is simple enough: "The Roman Catholic Church gave more financial and social support to the study of astronomy for over six centuries, from the recovery of ancient learning during the late Middle Ages into the Enlightenment, than any other, and, probably, all other, institutions." Despite the persecution of Galileo, Heilbron notes, the Church actively supported mathematical and astronomical research--often designing cathedrals that could also function as observatories--in order to set the precise date of Easter (a crucial endeavor for maintaining the unity of the Church). Heilbron's fluid, engaging style brings his detailed reconstructions of 16th- and 17th-century Church politics to life. And his argument that scientific knowledge was deemed both morally neutral and politically useful during the Reformation and beyond yields an unusually interesting, complex, and human understanding of Catholicism in the early Modern period. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Library Journal
It is difficult for contemporary readers who live in an increasingly global world to comprehend the difficulty of establishing the correct date of EasterAthe first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox. Heilbron (formerly history and vice chancellor, Berkeley; currently Senior Research Fellow, Oxford) chronicles the ironic relationship between astronomy and the Catholic Church as it seeks the means to determine this date. This is the story of politically astute astronomers and cardinals who have to reconcile church doctrine with Galileo's universe. Heilbron deals specifically with four cathedrals, which, as a result of the "Easter date problem," function as both houses of worship and excellent solar observatories. The text is filled with fine detail and is richly illustrated. An erudite and scholarly work with extensive notes and bibliography, this may be a bit narrow in scope for the average reader; recommended for large public and academic libraries.AJames Olson, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lib., Chicago

From Scientific American
"[Heilbron] has researched his subject deeply... a rich history of... the development of the calendar and the relations between the Church and science."

The great advantage of Professor Heilbron's book is that he assumes his reader is not an idiot, and neither is he, which is refreshingly original these days. It's true, as the previous reviewer noted, that he throws around a lot of geometry and technical astronomy, but he also writes so clearly that it's straightforward, if demanding of attention, to follow. His style is, moreover, both witty and often droll, as when he notes that by the late seventeenth century the Jesuits were teaching Galilean astronomy, "using the convenient fiction that it was a convenient fiction. Those willing to call a theory a hypothesis could publish any astronomy they wanted."

I wish there were more books like this!

I'm a professor of mathematics, but I'm also a "closet historian". This book is a great work of scholarship both in terms of history and mathematics. It's true that if you don't know much about spherical astronomy, you may get a bit of shell-shock, but why don't you pick up Kaler: "The Ever-changing Sky" or Evans: "The History and Practice of Ancient Astronomy" to learn the basic. The you can go back to Heilbron's book to appreciate it fully. Believe me, it's worth the effort!
PS. One of my students has written a mathematical supplement to this book. It's available on my home page. (Amazon won't let me give you the URL in the review, but just do a quick searh on the web or look at the "äbout me section".) So far it only covers the first few chapters, but we hope to be able to expand on it later. I hope some of you may find it useful.
