Gogh for it!

I wanted something to spark my 6YO son's interest in art. This book sure did. He asked me to read it to him a 2nd time right on the spot. He also spotted a Van Gogh print that I brought home. This is a fine series. I also got the Degas which wasn't quite as interesting but he still liked it. I just ordered Picasso and a few others. Get the Van Gogh and if your child loves it, try some of the others. (I also liked that this mentioned Van Gogh was very depressed once at loving a woman who didn't love him back.)

My five year old was so inspired reading this that she went to the basement and proceeded to make her own copies of his works. It is nice and simple, but with a decent amount of info and great pics.

Multiple-Wife Households from the Perspective of African American Muslim Women

With Polygyny, author Debra Majeed provides a personal yet scholarly investigation into a practice that is not well understood for its complexity, its function within the African American Muslim community, and its relationship to family law within Islam as well as to the American legal system. Her crisp descriptive stories of Muslim women and their families associated with the practice are embedded in a philosophical perspective she identifies as Muslim womanism and in her ethnographic evidence from 2003 to 2013. Readers are introduced to a range of issues that are rich in texture, as they are the basis for examining women’s agency and authority in such marital relationships, religious prescriptions in the Qur’an, legal forms of legitimation for polygyny, Imam Mohammed’s teachings on polygyny, and psychological factors associated with the well being of women and children in multiple-wife marriages.

Throughout the well-crafted six chapters, Majeed stays focused on her intent “to encourage self-examination of Muslim American family life and promote closer attention to the welfare of African American communities, American families, and society as whole” (6). In the Afterword, she also provides practical suggestions that follow up on her intellectual exploration into the lives of her subjects. These suggestions include five recommendations: 1). engage in meaningful dialogue and education about forms of Islamic marriage within the context of the secular United States; 2). require local mosques and Islamic organizations to document marriage registrations; 3). state the relationship a wife envisions in marriage contracts and encourage families to seek advice from knowledgeable and respected community members, marriage therapists, and family law experts; 4). encourage first and potential subsequent wives to communicate with each other prior to any multiple-wife marriage; and 5). remove communal acceptance of marriage ceremonies that take place without a husband’s current wife (or wives) knowledge.

Significantly, for all the women in Majeed’s fictional performance in chapter two, the method of presentation allows her to use her informants, with whom she had multiple interviews, to discuss issues with each other and to communicate their thoughts about their life circumstances in their own words. In doing so, Majeed ably succeeds in her laudable intent to “link [her] intellectual explorations to practical applications that can benefit communities and subjects [she] stud[ied]” (133). The contributions Polygyny makes to scholarship and to praxis is that it demonstrates an inclusivity that Majeed envisions is needed to open up potential spaces for further examination and development on this topic. So that, while she neither promotes nor condones polygyny, she supports its decriminalization—a book on this topic is what I hope awaits her readers.

Audiences for this text include both readers wanting to understand choices available to African American Muslim women within a polygynist family and readers aspiring to understand with greater depth the historical, religious, and sociological context of this particular marital relationship.

This book is the result of several months of dedicated work by Arvind Ravulavaru, a dedicated developer and writer with whom I ve had the pleasure of collaborating with on several occasions. This book provides a great way to get started with Ionic and provides detailed examples from which even experienced developers can learn.

Arvind goes through the process of installing everything you need to get started with Ionic, as well as setting up the native SDKs. From there, Arvind covers the basics: Ionic s components, navigation using UI-Router, custom styles, and APIs provided by Ionic. From there, readers can build two apps: a bookstore app and a real-time chat application.

For experienced developers, the book explains how to enable native device APIs through Cordova s plugins. You'll learn how to use ngCordova (another project by the Ionic Team) to use Cordova plugins in an Angular-syntax. In the chat application, you ll also see how to connect to external databases, Firebase, and have your data keep in sync across all devices.

Prior to joining Ionic as a core team member and developer advocate, I worked for another company creating many internal hybrid apps. After evaluating other frameworks, I chose Ionic because it offered the only complete solution for hybrid mobile development. Everything I needed to get going was provided by Ionic. Instead of focusing on how to architect my app, I could focus on just building the app.

Ionic offers a complete ecosystem for hybrid mobile app development, saving costs and offering a high-performing, beautiful alternative to native development. We released the stable version of Ionic in May, then released alpha versions of three of our platform services this summer. We don t have any plans to slow down, and our support for the open source Ionic SDK will always remain strong. In my role at Ionic, I work with experienced and new developers and travel all over the world to teach newbies and dive deep into code with Ionic pros. I m constantly impressed by how much people love the product and by what a dynamic, positive community we have.

A year and a half ago, Arvind started a blog titled The Jackal of JavaScript (http://thejackalofjavascript.com), where he writes about developing full-stack applications using JavaScript alone as the server-side and client-side programming language. He has written articles on various topics, such as DNA analysis, sentiment analysis with JavaScript, programming Raspberry Pi with JavaScript, and building a node-web kit and a Web RTC-based video chat client, to name a few. Apart from this, Arvind provides training, empowering companies with the latest and greatest technology available in the market. He also conducts start up workshops, where he teaches rapid prototyping with today's amazing tool stack. Arvind also provides information on how to take ideas to the market in a very short span of time. He always looks for ways to contribute to the open source community, making this world a better place for developers. As a consultant, Arvind always tries to power amazing business ideas with awesome technology solutions (language-agnostic), moving the human race up the evolution chain. Arvind recently started his own company in Hyderabad, where he is building products in the Internet of Things space. The aim of the company is to build IoT products for the world at an affordable price so that everyone can enjoy technology that powers lives. Best treatment of Ionic at this time

Unlike so many of the recent titles in the crush to exploit the popularity of AngularJS and Ionic, this author has a truly deep understanding of AngularJS and Ionic. I bought the book because I follow the author's "Jackal of JavaScript" blog closely. If you're new to Ionic, this is the best thing out there right now...

Worth it.

Very good book. The Angular section taught me more than actual Angular books did! The only bad thing is that there's SOOOO MUCH code to copy. There would be several lines of code to copy with only minimal explanation for it. He doesn't go into EVERY line's explanation. Also, the CSS component part doesn't really say much more than the Ionic site. But overall this book is pretty amazing. Definitely worth getting if you're serious about Ionic.

Making the transition from web to app easy!

After deciding to take the leap from web development to hybrid mobile app development I was find the answers I needed through my standard learning channels of online videos and forums.
This book has helped me enormously. It is clear, concise and makes learning the Ionic framework so much easier than muddling through contradictory examples and demo's online.
As well as covering the Ionic framework the book also covers Cordova and helps the reader understand how the two technologies work together and which tool is best for the particular action you wish to perform.
The book itself follows the Ionic learning curve in a logical step by step manor with easy to understand examples and great downloadable code snippets to back up the examples and help you on your way.
