The Triumph of Improvisation: Gorbachev's Adaptability, Reagan's Engagement, and the End of the Cold War, by James Graham Wilson

In The Triumph of Improvisation, James Graham Wilson takes a long view of the end of the Cold War, from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 to Operation Desert Storm in January 1991. Drawing on deep archival research and recently declassified papers, Wilson argues that adaptation, improvisation, and engagement by individuals in positions of power ended the specter of a nuclear holocaust. Amid ambivalence and uncertainty, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, George Shultz, George H. W. Bush, and a host of other actors engaged with adversaries and adapted to a rapidly changing international environment and information age in which global capitalism recovered as command economies failed.

Eschewing the notion of a coherent grand strategy to end the Cold War, Wilson paints a vivid portrait of how leaders made choices; some made poor choices while others reacted prudently, imaginatively, and courageously to events they did not foresee.

The Cold War"s Demise
By Joseph Annaruma
Wilson has crafted a concise timeline of the events that led to the collapse of Communism, the destruction of the Berlin Wall, and the end of Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe. New scholarship has been brought to the story, notably, private correspondence, newly declassified documentation, and archival records.
The book was easy to read, and considering that this is a scholarly work, that is quite welcome, as scholarly works often tend to be a bit dry-this book was anything but dry. It also seemed to me to be devoid of much bias, which is a prerequisite for a successful historical work.
The major point being made here is that the events that ended the Cold War were not orchestrated, but took place rather serendipitously, as the title implies. In essence, the author makes a good case for his thesis, which utilizes diary entries (Reagan, Bush, Gorbachev etc), and archival documents to Illustrate how leaders of the U.S. and USSR compromised, and essentially took leaps of faith to get to the ultimate goal of ending the cold war, bringing the Soviets into the fold of the New World Order of economic, and political partnership, relying on a new found mutual trust in drastically cutting nuclear missile proliferation to all-time lows.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Cold War, or Post-WWII European politics and social history. The new documents used offer an interesting viewpoint on the American and Soviet cooperation towards ending the Cold War, and the thawing of US-Soviet relations.

A good book if you want to understand the winning of the Cold War.
By Daune Robinson
I bought this book looking for something that made good use of newly released information on Reagan, Gorbachev and the Cold War that dominated the politics of my generation. I had read another book on this topic and was horribly disappointed - not so with this book. The author clearly did his research, and brought depth, breadth, and good insight to his telling of the long story of the Cold War.

Modern popular interpretation of the end of the Cold War credits Ronald Reagan almost exclusively for the final results, but this author shows the contributions of many of Reagan's cabinet members, Gorbachev and his cohorts, and George Bush and his cabinet. The book spans politics, economics, military strategy, the influence of middle east strategy, and philosophical perspectives of all the players. By the time I was through I had a very clear picture of the many complexities, and while I may not understand all the intricate details I did find the author gave me a much broader understanding of what led to the end of the Soviet Union as the other major world power.

This book did give a good explanation of the internal and external issues that led to Gorbachev's rise to power, and to the confluence of events that led to the amazing arms reduction agreements and the calming of Cold War tensions. The description of the severe economic problems facing the Soviet Union was fascinating and the impact of weapons buildup on those economic issues was made very clear by the author.

I did take issue with some of the interpretations of Reagan's handling of his cabinet members, and his strategy in handling the Soviet Union in general. I'll admit to being a Reagan fan. That said, Mr. Wilson's perspective on Reagan and what he seemed to feel was essentially a rudderless leadership style is, in my opinion, flawed. He makes the case that Reagan didn't provide strong leadership. i would argue from reading this book that Reagan was an amazingly strong leader and that leadership, which included a cabinet full of widely diverse opinions and philosophies, was what enabled him and his staff to navigate the very uncertain waters of the Cold War and the rush to arms based on MAD. I think far too much credit was given to George Bush and his staff for the events already set in place, but I also think that Mr. Wilson did an excellent job of providing credit for the results to Gorbachev and his staff in easing tension and bringing calm to a tense world situation.

Overall - an excellent book - well written, easy to follow, and something anyone who wants a good understanding of the Cold War and the relationship between communism and capitalism should read.

Deeply researched and highly readable; enlightens without lecturing
By Scott Whitmore
Highly readable and illuminating, in The Triumph of Improvisation: Gorbachev's Adaptability, Reagan's Engagement, and the End of the Cold War author James Graham Wilson (@jamesgramwilson) rejects current theories explaining the Cold War’s end and instead focuses on the actions of key individuals in both the U.S. and Soviet governments, primarily U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, Secretary of State George Shultz and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. In different ways, these men eschewed the unproductive rhetoric and actions that defined the relationship of the two superpowers for decades and by doing so changed the world.

Throughout, Mr. Wilson’s prose is crisp and his arguments lucid and quite compelling. The book is the product of deep and thorough research, but at no point does the narrative get bogged down. Before beginning I wondered how well a complex subject like the end of the Cold War could be covered in just seven chapters, but by the end I felt Mr. Wilson had more than met the task, enlightening without lecturing. For those who wish to delve deeper into specific events, the end notes provide a great starting point for further research.

Special emphasis is placed in The Triumph of Improvisation on illuminating the actions of Shultz, who should be remembered as one of this country’s greatest statesmen despite no formal training or prior interest in foreign policy. An economist by trade, Shultz believed the Soviet Union could change and he worked hard to mitigate the efforts of the hardliners surrounding Reagan by emphasizing a Four-Part Framework (bilateral relations, regional matters, arms control and human rights), not letting problems in one area derail the whole relationship.

Often heralded as the paragon of conservative values, Reagan is shown to be more complex. His deep-seated desire to eliminate nuclear weapons meant doing something counter to his beliefs: working with the communists running the Soviet Union and thereby implicitly acknowledging their legitimacy. He truly believed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), commonly called “Star Wars,” was the key to eliminating the nuclear threat. Most surprising, once functional Reagan was intent on sharing SDI with the Soviets and the world, something the hardliners around him vehemently opposed and the Soviets (somewhat naturally) did not believe.

By preference or political necessity, Reagan surrounded himself with many aides and appointees who did not share his lofty goals, and his lax management style and contradictory statements created turmoil and uncertainty within his staff. By contrast, George W. Bush’s team was cohesive and on message — which proved critical while navigating the turbulent events after the Berlin Wall came down — while their president lacked “the vision thing” his predecessor possessed in abundance. Bush’s prudence provoked criticism from some quarters but given the extraordinary and unprecedented issues he faced caution was more important than boldness.

Mikhail Gorbachev lost an empire and won the Nobel Peace Prize in the process. He was as determined as Reagan to see nuclear weapons eliminated — all the more so after the Chernobyl disaster — and he wanted to improve the lives of those in his charge. To do that meant changing the status quo, and after cleaning house of those with different views, Gorbachev set out to reform socialism through perestroika. Of all the players involved in the end of the Cold War, Gorbachev had the most to gain and most to lose. Some could argue he had no choice, that the Soviet system was so broken by the time he assumed the party chair that reform was the only viable option, but even if true he must be lauded for making the choice to move forward toward something hopefully better. It says much about the hollowness of the state he inherited that just a year after the Berlin Wall fell, and seven years after Reagan’s “Evil Empire” speech, the Soviet Union was on the margin of world events with Gorbachev begging the U.S. for loans.

A few random thoughts:

• At the beginning of the period covered, each side thought (1) the other side possessed a distinct military advantage and (2) desired the their elimination. Conversely, neither side understood why their opposite numbers constantly insisted they were, in fact, the ones trailing behind.

• Many of the hardliners working for Reagan, notably Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, were unshakeable in their distrust of the Soviets and pursued agendas that were often counter to that of the president. Proven wrong by hindsight, at the time these men and women were so sure of their views that no opposing opinions were entertained and those who espoused such thoughts attacked. I couldn’t help but make a contemporary comparison to the U.S. Tea Party.

• After Reagan and Gorbachev signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty in 1987, some hawks in this country said any treat the Soviets were willing to sign must be bad for the U.S. Conversely, any treaty good for us would be anathema to them. Such is the type of thinking that sustained the Cold War.

• For those who did not live through this period, having some context about the media and flow of information may be helpful. Although CNN was launched in 1980, the “24-hour news cycle” we live with today evolved over time, defined by saturation coverage of events such as the Challenger disaster (1986), Tiananmen Square protest (1989) and Gulf War (1991). One can’t help but wonder how competing cable news outlets, social media, and the Internet’s free flow of information would have affected — for good or bad — the events depicted in The Triumph of Improvisation.

This review is based on a copy of the book provided for that purpose. I must point out that although I am hardly an academic, I lived through the events depicted in The Triumph of Improvisation and was, for much of time covered in the book, serving in the U.S. Navy.

My first birthday was just a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis; I grew up, got married and started a family of my own during the Cold War. In grade school I crawled under my desk during Atomic Attack Drills and as an enlisted Sailor in the U.S. Navy I learned how to don a protective suit and decontaminate nuclear fallout. The Soviets were THEM, we were US. Nuclear war was never not a possibility, although admittedly it wasn’t often at the front of our minds. It was simply accepted as being so.

Then the Berlin Wall came down and suddenly the world was a very different place. A place where my own kids, who were born in that other time but did not experience it, have a hard time understanding what all the fuss was about when my wife and I share stories about growing up in the shadow of Nuclear Armageddon. Still, given the new realities of international terrorism, perhaps there was some benefit to knowing exactly who your adversary was.

Complete waste of money
By tiffany
The book only has a few solutions with no explanations. I ended up paying a monthly subscription to chegg.com where all answers are worked out step by step. I should have done that instead of buying this book. Don't waste your money on this solutions manual.

Ugh... but then again, what are the options?
By Hengyi Hu
I bought this book to get extra review questions. It does contain extra problems not in the back of the book, and it has explanations for both the problems in the back of the book and the extra ones. The only problem is that the booklet is terrible. It has terrible formatting, terrible explanations, and terrible selection of questions to answer. But then again, there isn't another solutions manual. You can always search the internet for answers to the questions.

Doesn't have all the answers!
By Christine Garcia
I knew it wouldn't have every answer in the book but I was hoping for all odd or even answers to help me out but instead, it doesn't have the chapter review answers and 2/3 of the answers for the sections. I thought it would help me study but it has only proven to be useful a handful of times.

Gr 5-8–Moonshadow is the newest member of the shogun's secret service. An orphan trained by the Grey Light Order, the young ninja is able to look into the eyes of animals and command them to follow his wishes by using his ki. That remarkable ability and his sword skills are all he can rely on during his first mission, stealing plans for a dangerous weapon from an unhappy warlord who hopes to rekindle war in Japan. Moonshadow must survive not only assaults by the warlord's hired warriors–a gangster, a swordsman, and a legendary ninja–but also by a rival spy, who is a girl his own age trained by the Grey Light Order's most powerful enemies. The swordplay is fast and furious, and Japanese terms and places are integrated in a manner that reluctant readers will find accessible. This adventure is part spy novel, part magic, and all fun.Alana Joli Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT

From Booklist
In this good old-fashioned adventure set in medieval Japan, Moonshadow is a young “ninja spy warrior” who, after extensive training, sets off on his first mission—to foil the plans for a secret weapon by nefarious characters who want to disturb the peace. Following the exhilarating opening sequence, which establishes the drama to come, the nonstop action requires readers to be, like ninjas themselves, ever vigilant. The pacing is so intense that if readers let down their guard, they will miss something important about Moonshadow's ability to see through the eyes of animals, control his sword, battle his enemies, and get to know an unexpected female compatriot. The language is modern, but the setting, clothing, tactics, and tools are well placed in their time period, and a glossary provides further insight into the characters' names and experiences. Once drawn in by the opening words, “for glory or destruction,” readers will be satisfied by the length and polished writing and will look forward to forthcoming sequels. Grades 4-7. --Andrew Medlar

A Timely and Exciting Read - Especially for Boys and Those Interested in Martial Arts and Japan!
By M. Lee
As a mother who screens everything her 11-year-old daughter reads, I had previously (as well as said daughter) thoroughly enjoyed Maya Snow's "The Sisters of the Sword" series and was looking for more stories set in medieval Japan. Our wonderful librarians introduced us to "Heart of a Samurai" by Margi Preus, another excellent book, and while waiting to get checked out, I came across "Moonshadow: Rise of the Ninja" by Simon Higgins - and what a lucky find that was! Simon Higgins, a writer who should write his own life story some time, dies a fantastic job summarizing the differences between "samurai", "ninja" and "ronin" in a few short paragraphs, and takes us on a thrill ride that reflects the author's own martial arts training.

The writing is precise and controlled, and even if at times, the story itself is a little predictable, I enjoyed the excursion tremendously. This is a great book for boys, actually, who are interested in either martial arts or Japan. Coincidentally, both "Moonshadow" and "Heart" came to us just in the weeks following the tsunami and earthquake in Japan, and it is obvious that both authors understand and appreciate the stoicism and bravery of the Japanese people in the face of tremendous tragedy, both historically and currently. Happily, in "Moonshadow", Simon Higgins' used his admiration for the Japanese and knowledge of his art (both writing and martial arts) start and maintain the pace of the adventure. We are really looking forward to "The Nightmare Ninja"! In said daughter's own words:

"Moonshadow is the newest agent of the Grey Light Order, a secret brotherhood of ninja spy warriors in medieval Japan who try to do good in the world. For his first mission, Moonshadow is sent to retrieve the plans of a new gun in the hands of an evil samurai. But will Moonshadow's first mission be successful? Or will his feelings for a rival spy, Snowhawk, cause his failure ... and death in the arms of the Deathless, a legend samurai who killed his own master and has the ability to stop his own blood from spilling when he is cut?

"My favorite part in the book was when Moonshadow decided to save a bunch of farmers from bandits even though he wasn't supposed to let anything get in-between his mission because he felt sorry for them and decided to trust his gut and rescue them. I think that that showed bravery, kindness and quick thinking.

"I would give the book five stars: two for the plot, two for the characters, and one for the writing. Like John Flanagan, bestselling author of `The Ranger's Apprentice', I agree that this book is `masterful.' The book, `Moonshadow: Rise of the Ninja' by Simon Higgins is a great book!"

Authentic and enthralling (somewhat bloody) adventure
By Maggie Knapp
MOONSHADOW: RISE OF THE NINJA contains lots of action, the expected level of violence, and a dose of magic, stirred together in an enthralling adventure set in the samurai culture of medieval Japan. Naneshi ("No Name") was abandoned on the steps of the Grey Light orphanage, and has grown to a talented young teen fighter. He is given the name Moonshadow before being sent out to perform dangerous feats against powerful enemies. The frequent use of Japanese terms (explained in context and in a helpful glossary in the back) and the details of the weapons and fight techniques lend a delicious air of realism to the story. The author weaves in comments on patience, honor and loyalty along with the piercing shuriken and the pounding bo. Readers who like Jeff Stone's FIVE ANCESTOR'S series, Maya Snow's SISTERS OF THE SWORD and Chris Bradford's YOUNG SAMURAI will most likely enjoy this book as well.

first is solid, second disappointing
By B. Capossere
Moonshadow: Rise of the Ninja and Moonshadow: The Nightmare Ninja are the first two installments in a series of YA books by Simon Higgins about, well, ninjas. The first book was mostly entertaining if a bit slight, but the second, unfortunately was disappointing due to an overreliance on fight scenes. While the series has potential, it took a step backward in book two.

Moonshadow is the title character, a young member of the Grey Light Order of ninjas. In Rise of the Ninja, we meet his as he is completing the final stage of his training. Upon succeeding, he is granted his new ninja name--Moonshadow--and his first assignment: to steal the plans for a new kind of weapon from Silver Wolf, an evil samurai seeking to overturn the current social order. To do so, he'll have to employ not only his weapons and body training, but also his special talent of The Eye of the Beast, which allows him to mind-link to an animal and use its senses. Along with facing Silver Wolf's handpicked team of professional killers, including the intimidating and mysterious person known only as Deathless, Moonshadow will also have to deal with Snowhawk, a ninja from a rival order, one that is sworn against the Grey Lights.

The setting is Japan during the earlier decades of the Tokugawa/Edo era (which ran roughly 1600-late 1800s). Not being an expert, I can't say how accurately the timeline and events hews to actual history, but Higgins himself has a note at the back explaining he's taken many "liberties" in this "romanticized . . . yarn", so one shouldn't try and nitpick factual details. It's a good choice of time setting (or manipulation of time setting) in that Higgins presents us a Japan on the cusp of possible technological and societal change--guns are entering the country and old ways and regimes are being questioned, all of which ratchets up the larger sense of tension while also providing specific plot point. Higgins also does a generally nice, if at times cursory, job of conveying the sense of the time, place, and culture--whether it be via the food, modes of travel, dress, weapons, dueling styles, folktales, etc. While none are delved into, taken as a whole they serve to transport the reader to another time and place.

The characters are mostly engaging, if they fall a bit into predictable line, as does the plot in places. Moonshadow grows as a person making this a coming of age novel, and we see growth as well for Snowhawk, though her story gets saved for better treatment in The Nightmare Ninja. The side characters are a bit two-dimensional, but avoid being simple clichés. The action is quick-paced and involves a fair amount of fighting that does go into a pretty good amount of detail, blow-by-blow in some cases. Some young readers will eat these scenes up; others may skim through them by the time they get to the third or fourth. That said, Rise of the Ninja I found much better balanced between fights and quieter, more character-driven or suspense-driven plotting than its sequel, The Nightmare Ninja.

As a follow-up, The Nightmare Ninja continues Moonshadow and Snowhawk's stories as the two team up to once again attempt to foil Silver Wolf's conspiracies to take down the current government. The story is complicated by an Order War as earlier competition has turned into out and out warfare between The Grey Light Order and Snowhawk's former order. Even worse for the two young heroes, along with having to face the physical threat of professional killers, Silver Wolf has now employed some who seem to be able to attack via the mind.

As mentioned, the sequel was a step backwards. The biggest problem by far is its lack of balance. The book really careens from one fight scene to another and while each individually may be fine, so many thrown so ceaselessly at the reader becomes a bit wearying and monotonous. The detail in each also seems to have been increased, so that the fights often dragged on well past the point of interest. To be honest, by the halfway point I was skimming fight scenes, at the three-quarters point I was skipping them nearly in their entirety, and at the end, with the climactic one, I went back to skimming. Unfortunately, with so many fight scenes, all that skimming didn't leave me a lot to sink my teeth into. One nice touch in the sequel is Higgin's use of Japanese myths/folklore and the various types of odd creatures and monsters we see, many of them pleasantly unfamiliar (even if they themselves weren't all that pleasant). I wish he had spent more time on those rather in ways beyond long fight scenes. There is a nice understory involving Snowhawk's character and her choice of which path she will walk. It isn't all that subtle, and it unfortunately gets buried beneath all the fighting, but it does raise the book's level a bit. Again, I wish more had been done with it in better fashion.

The series so far remind me of the Otori series of books by Lian Hearn, also set in Japan, in that the first book is quite strong, but then the followings ones pale in quality. Rise of the Ninja is not as strong or well-written a book as Hearn's Across the Nightingale Floor, but it is solidly entertaining, quick-paced, with likable characters who grow over the course of the book. The Nightmare Ninja is a step back, but perhaps Higgins can regain the balance and touch in subsequent books. A decent recommendation for Rise of the Ninja (especially for those who like a lot of action and fighting of the sword/martial arts kind) but advice to skip the sequel for now.

Here is my nine-year-old son's review
The first one was better because the evil was a more looming presence, the ending battle scene was better, and the evil characters were more interesting. The fights were exciting in both. The characters were interesting. In the sequel, I liked how Snowhawk had to learn how to control her rage and fury. And how Kagero was an older version of her so she could see what she would be like. It wasn't quite as good as the first but still good.

Understanding Environmental Policy, by Steven Cohen

In Understanding Environmental Policy, Steven Cohen introduces an innovative, multidimensional framework for developing effective environmental policy within the United States and around the world. He demonstrates his approach through an analysis of four case studies representing current local, national, and international environmental challenges: New York City's garbage crisis; the problem of leaks from underground storage units; toxic waste contamination and the Superfund program; and global climate change. He analyzes the political, scientific, technological, organizational, and moral import of these environmental issues and the nature of the policy surrounding them. He also places a specific focus on the response from the George W. Bush administration. Cohen considers how our current environmental policy and problems reflect the value we place on our ecosystems; whether science and technology can solve the environmental problems they create; and what policy is necessary to reduce environmentally damaging behaviors. Cohen's multifaceted approach is essential reading for analysts, managers, activists, students, and scholars of environmental policy.

Review

College-level students of environmental science...[and] political science students – especially those working on the global scale – will also find it invaluable.

(Midwest Book Review)

Cohen proposes a conceptual framework for policy analysis that explicitly looks at values, political concerns, science and technology aspects, policy design and economic issues, and operational management...It would be a good choice for a (multidisciplinary) graduate seminar.

(Choice)

Those working within the field may benefit from its big picture approach to diagnosing several environmental ills...consistent emphasis upon the role of environmental values in policy analysis and development should be commended.

Excellent book on policy
By L. Mark Hoerrner
Professor Cohen (Now a vice-dean at Columbia University) presents a very easy to read and understand framework for interpreting environmental issues. To illustrate this, he applies his framework to a number of cases - toxic spills, the New York garbage crisis and more which underlines the different policy angles from which a specific environmental issue can be viewed. I highly recommend this book to any undergrad studying environmental policy and any graduate student looking to use a specific methodology for research.

Environmental Management Tool Kit
By Fernando Arias
This past winter I read the book above [Understanding Environmental Policy] thoroughly and really like the clarity of the "framework". It was especially useful how professor Cohen concludes with a call for constant improvement of the framework model and ultimately "manage" the situation/condition appropriately.

From the Back Cover
A scientist with a revolutionary cure for AIDS is incarcerated without explanation. Valuable artifacts are mysteriously misplaced by a prominent archaeological institution. Three celebrated astronauts perish in a suspicious fire after voicing their criticism of the US space program. Yet our world's most powerful agencies hastily dispel these alarming reports as conspiracy theories, and bury them in padlocked archives. The fact is that a suppression syndrome exists in our society. Suppressed Inventions and Other Discoveries exposes the startling degree of truth behind the rumors.

Jonathan Eisen has collected over forty intriguing stories of scientific cover-ups and programs of misinformation concocted to conceal some of the most phenomenal innovations in mankind's history. These no-holds-barred accounts force us to confront the naivete -- and danger -- of trusting our academic and political leaders to act always for the common good. Suppressed Inventions and Other Discoveries presents documented evidence that corporate self-interest, scientific arrogance, and political savvy have contrived to keep us in the dark about technological breakthroughs or interplanetary contact that may shift the current balance of power.

Prepare yourself for a revealing look at the research and development to which we've been denied access. Suppressed Inventions and Other Discoveries begins by examining the ties that bind the medical establishment to powerful pharmaceutical corporations. Then it details the struggle of the independent researcher against Orthodox Science and its code of conduct, the Scientific Method. Next, the book investigates the cover-up of information concerning UFOs andextraterrestrial life that's certain to make you reconsider what you thought was science fiction. The final section discusses just a few of the numerous alternate energy resources and fuel savers that, if put on the market today, would soon run the fossil fuel monopolies out of business.

It's clear that we're sorely lacking some vital information. Suppressed Inventions and Other Discoveries is a bold -- and necessary -- effort to help us educate ourselves. Our future depends on it.

About the Author
Jonathan Eisen completed his undergraduate education at Oberlin College, and earned his M.A. from the University of Illinois. He worked as an editor for Pantheon Books, the New American Library, and Commonweal Magazine and was the founding publisher of Auckland Institute of Technology Press in New Zealand, where he currently resides.

Mr. Eisen is an investigative journalist who has authored more than fourteen books. He is currently the publisher of Bioethics Press in Australia, and coeditor of What Your Doctor Will Never Tell You, a bimonthly newsletter featuring suppressed medical and health research.

Conspiracy theories or not?
By L. Thompson
After having done my own research in many of these topics, I was surprised to run across this book which lists so many in one place, plus many others I was not aware of. Excellent research material and many footnotes and references provided to continue researching these topics. When you look at the reasons behind agendas, these conspiracy theories shed light on the why's. Very interesting about the Smithsonian. Anyone who has looked into politics will understand why these subjects should be looked into, rather than just swallow what the media tells us. There are sheep and there are wolves, many people prefer to be sheep and live life with eyes closed. It's more comfortable that way. Eisen shows us things, with doing our own research, that others don't want to see. Excellent book!

Suppressed Inventions
By Dumbledore
This is not the first book on the topic that I have read. I have always found it to be helpful to obtain information from a variaey of sources and authors, to avoid bias. The advantage,(and disadvantage,)of this book is that it gives you a brief synopsis of a variety of topics. It has a good bibliography in the back if you want to read more on the subject that interested you. In comparing the opinions of this author with other sources, I have found the information to be accurate, albeit limited in scope. I have given this book as a gift to several of my friends who are interested in exploring the topic. It serves as an excellent introductory volume. The book avoids getting into highly technical data, so it is an easy read for anyone, and with the relatively short chapters, each on an individual topic, you don't have to read it all in one sitting.

There are conspiracy facts, not just theories
By MRM90
I thought this was a very informative book about numerous cover-ups. For those people who take the time and effort to research the topics in this book, it will become evident that at the very least, much of it is true.

And here is a BIG one that I have to mention since it isn't in the book, and it's a fact. Students throughout the world are taught information about magnetism that is deliberately misleading and incorrect, and magnetism is at the core of all sciences. A scientist named Albert Roy Davis discovered, in 1936, that the North and South poles of any and all magnets are TWO SEPARATE AND DISTINCT ENERGIES, each having a different effect on matter. His experiments which demonstrate that magnetism is two separate energies (experiments that are 100% reproducible) PROVE that there is an entirely different physics than what is taught in college today, because Michael Faraday's experiments are the basis for accepted physics, and Davis' discovery PROVES that Faraday was wrong!

Davis also discovered that North pole magnetism is extremely effective in eliminating cancer as well as many other diseases. Animals that were experimented on in his laboratory were far more intelligent, lived much longer, and were physically smaller when exposed to the North pole of a magnet shortly before, during or shortly after conception. The South pole animals were much less intelligent, died prematurely, and were physically larger than the animals that had no magnetic exposure. The results were exactly the same with every species tested. The books by Albert Roy Davis and Walter C. Rawls, Jr. are excellent and they will comfirm the suppression of several topics mentioned in this book. My two favorites of theirs are "Magnetism and Its Effects on the Living System" and "The Magnetic Blueprint of Life".

Getting back to Eisen's book, I doubt that the Moon landing was a hoax, but I do believe that there is much more to the story than what is rehashed in the media. Why did we stop going there? Why are we planning on going again? And why, with all of the technological advancments of the past 40 years (even excluding Albert Roy Davis' discovery), is it going to take years to make it back to the moon. It makes no sense, and that tells me that there is certainly another story unfolding behind the headlines.

I don't like the regularity with which the phrase "conspiracy theory" is used because it deceptively implies that they are only theories and can't be proven. There are a number of conspiracies that can and have been proven, making them conspiracy facts, not theories.

Leadership for an Age of Higher Consciousness II: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times, by Bhakti Tirtha Swami

In this sequel to his internationally acclaimed Leadership for an Age of Higher Consciousness: Administration from a Metaphysical Perspective, His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami explores the greatness of two famous leaders from the Vedic tradition of ancient India.

Addressing the leader within each of us, B.T. Swami shows us that the greatest leaders see themselves as servants first, they place integrity and character before personal gain, and the know how to tap into the help that is available from both the earthly and spiritual realms. True servant leaders are animated visionaries who cultivate divine power to transform diverse individuals with scattered goals into communities with a unified, sacred mission.

"Good leadership is not just a matter of making things happen; it is a matter of making essential things happen, making important and productive things happen, and helping people feel good about what is happening. Leaders need to have a vision, but they also need to know how to convince others that their vision can manifest, and how to empower them to participate in the mission of bringing the vision about."

Bernini: The Sculptor of the Roman Baroque, by Rudolph Wittkower

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was the most influential sculptor of his age. Inventive and skilled, he virtually created the Baroque style. In his religious sculptures he excelled at capturing movement and extreme emotion, uniting figures with their setting to create a single conception of overwhelming intensity that expressed the fervour of Counter-Reformation Rome. Intensity and drama also characterize his portraits and world-famous Roman fountains.

From Library Journal
Wittkower's (1901-71) book, first published in 1955 and updated in 1966 and 1981, derives from an Italian edition of 1900. The text, which deals chiefly with the sculptures of this multifaceted Italian artist (1598-1680), is a classic. Though some of the entries have been updated and some new plates added, the main reason for this new edition seems to be its first issuance in paperback. This, and the fact that the color plates are less than stellar, mean that all but advanced art history collections can safely pass on this edition if they have earlier ones. Avery's book takes a broader look at Bernini, covering sculpture, drawings, models in terra cotta, urbanistic projects such as fountains, and his work for St. Peter's and other Roman churches. The color photographs are better than those in the Phaidon book, where they are separate from the text; neither title offers uniformly better black-and-whites. Avery (sculpture, Victoria and Albert Museum) writes well, offers more context and comparative illustrations, and draws on material unavailable to Wittkower in shaping his text. Avery is the choice for all but the most scholarly of collections, which will want both titles.?Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Lib.

Review
'First published in 1955, this volume has never been topped for its clarity of discourse or the stunning beauty of its reproductions. It is the black and white photographs of Bernini's breathtaking sculpture that best capture the timeless wonder of their precision and vitality.' (Booklist) 'Wittkower's Bernini rightly enjoys almost canonical status among studies of the artist and his age, as an elegant survey which provides deep insight and rests lightly on profound scholarship.' (Burlington Magazine)

About the Author
Rudolf Wittkower was born in Berlin in 1901. Leaving Germany when the Nazis came to power, he was one of the animators of the Warburg Institute of London. In 1941 he organized, with Fritz Saxl, the exhibition British Art and the Mediterranean, the publication of which (1948) forms an important document of the aims and methods of the Warburg Institute. A great scholar of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Wittkower taught at both the University of London and Columbia University. His books, all important works of scholarship, include Die Zeichnungen des Gian Lorenzo Bernini (with H. Bruer, 1931), The Drawings of the Carracci at Windsor Castle (1952), Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Sculptor of Roman Baroque (1955), Art and Architecture in Italy, 1600-1750 (1958), Born under Saturn (with Margot Wittkower, 1963), and Divine Michelangelo: The Florentine Academy's Homage on His Death in 1564 (with Margot Wittkower, 1964). In addition, he was a frequent contributor to the Journal of the Warbung and Courtauld Institute, the Art Bulletin, Burlington Magazine and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, among others.

THE book on Bernini
By Mon Graffito
[[VIDEOID:mo1EYUNKFH1BOZW]]Phaidon does something that I've not seen before with other publishers: understands that statues are made to be looked at from various angles. This superb collection does just that, showing the works of a Master Sculptor (to my taste, better than Michelangelo) in great detail. The photos are art-photos, not just catalog photos. You can feel the photographer has a good understanding of sculpture and light and brings them together in a way that does justice to Bernini.
Another forte of the book is the text. Unlike other art books, where the writer floods you with professional information and likes to impress with his knowledge, the text in this book goes straight to the point: explains Bernini's life and the context in which his work came to life.
Watch the video I made, it will help you get a better idea of what the book has to offer. Im a great lover of Bernini and this is the first time I feel really close to his work, while turning the pages of a book. Ive seen most of his works, as I live in Rome. So it's not little to see Bernini so well represented in a book! Kudos for Phaidon!

I love this book
By Dry_gulch
I love this book. The black and white photos allow you to really admire the work. I have my color photos from my trip. Had barely heard of Bernini till we toured the Villa Borghese and now he is my favorite. This is the first art book I have ever bought so it may not be enough for scholars but I love it as a lover of Italy.
