His long-awaited sixth book sings with the familiar elegiac Southern cadences, his prose is sweepingly lyrical (if sometimes melodramatic), unabashedly sentimental (if sometimes indigestibly schmaltzy). The hero, Jack McCall, describes himself as a man on the run from his past: the suicide of his beloved wife; the destructive influence of his icy, manipulative mother and mean, bullying, alcoholic father; the betrayal of his youthful ideals, his faith in the Catholic Church, his boyhood friends. There is, of course, the familiar theme of dysfunctional families; in addition to the McCalls, two other family units vie for the dubious title of most messed-up. But Conroy has added a new element here, by dramatizing his conviction that the "unbearable wound" of Vietnam was our country's spiritual Holocaust. Conroy takes on these emotionally laden issues in chapters so direct and powerful that readers will be moved by his intimacy with the material, and perhaps astonished by his authority over it. Conroy meshes complex plot lines with ease. Jack, a food and travel writer, fled with his toddler daughter, Leah, to Rome in 1982 in the wake of his wife Shyla's suicidal jump from a bridge in Charleston, S.C., and her parents' subsequent lawsuit to deny him custody of Leah. He returns home some years later because his mother is dying of leukemia. In addition to becoming embroiled in family tension, he begins a slow process of reconciliation with Shyla's parents, who eventually tell him the stories of their respective Holocaust experiences; with his first love, Ledare Ashley, now a scriptwriter employed by their youthful chum, Mike Hess, to write a screenplay of their growing-up years; and with his parents and siblings. He witnesses the return to Waterford of another friend, Jordan Elliot, who has been presumed dead for 18 years after he was accused of murder during a protest against the Vietnam War, and who was betrayed by the fourth member of their boyhood clan, Capers Middleton, who is now running for governor of South Carolina. Though the book suffers from some florid digressions (a fish story that makes Jonah's adventure seem tame, a totally inappropriate shaggy-dog tale), it is always passionately sincere. Conroy's dark humor has its usual sardonic edge, and his characters' rat-a-tat repartee is laden with casual obscenities and jocular insults. As expected, the characters are larger than life-impossibly beautiful, romantic, witty; in particular, Jack's precocious daughter may seem too mature, sweet, graceful, poised and smart to be true. In the end, of course, as Jack understands that everybody in his life carries a tragic secret equal to the anguish he bears, he achieves healing in the very community, and the very South, he had been determined to leave forever. 750,000 first printing; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selection; author tour.

Conroy evolves from the Margaret Mitchell school of southern writing, where everything must be Big--the smartest, most beautiful people on the planet living the biggest lives on the grandest sets and, of course, wracked by the greatest tragedies. It's all here in the story of Jack McCall of Waterford, South Carolina, his five brothers, drunken father, white-trash mother, and Holocaust-surviving in-laws. Nothing small happens in this book: the McCalls' story is played out against World War II, Auschwitz, the sixties, and, of course, the South in all its triumph and tragedy. Even the little moments are big in their way: the best cup of cappuccino, the most beautiful southern evening, the freshest shrimp, the most precocious kid. And yet, sneer as we will, we also must admit that Conroy plays the high-concept game as well as anyone. Like Mitchell, he builds narrative momentum that is impossible to resist, and he writes with a hammy eloquence that, while often infuriating, fits his subject matter perfectly. A Treasure

I read this book when it was originally published. I have always said it is my favorite book. I decided to read it again now that I am 65. Beach Music is still my favorite book! Baby-Boomers must read it to revisit the Vietnam war and what it did to our generation. It relates to the country now as we struggle to find our way. You must read it to remember the Holocaust and what can happen when we turn a blind eye to monsters who hate us. I wish the world still had Pat Conroy to write our stories in his beautiful language that plays out his interpretations in our minds like a great movie. I will miss him so.

A story of coming of age to generational challenges superbly in a story which superbly unfolds. The reader experiences what it's like to grow up in the south, the culture of Italy and some dark experiences of Families who survived Aushwitz.
Endearingly dysfunctional families and teens of the 60's in the south guide you through both the adventure and misadventures of their lives. ❤️ Jack

Very, very detailed and descriptive of his characters and the story setting of South Carolina and it's wonderful Low Country. The reader feels as though they are right there almost watching the story unfold. Will miss his writings.

A readable but literal translation is necessary because in the Eudemian Ethics, more than usual in Aristotle’s writings, the logic of the argumentation can turn on the peculiar wording or order. Simpson explains the argumentation where necessary in notes and separate explanatory comments. This book is a fresh, twenty-first-century rendition of the work of one of the most eminent philosophers of all time.

As a seasoned classicist and moral philosopher, Simpson’s translation deciphers what is often a concentrated and elliptical text, and in doing so, he at once provides the college student with a faithful and readable translation and in providing terminological clarity aids the scholar in the discussion of doctrine. Simpson’s painstaking discussion of the history of commentaries on the text through the centuries does much to clarify the meaning of the text. One must judge this translation and commentary as an indispensable tool for the serious student of the ethics of Aristotle.”

Simpson has also usefully rescued the Aristotelian Virtues and Vices from the dustbins of scholarship and provided cogent thoughts and commentary about why it should be taken seriously by Aristotle scholars. One hopes that Simpson is on the cusp of a wave of Aristotle scholarship that enriches our understanding of his ethical theories with a full appreciation of his entire ethical corpus.”

Gogh for it!

I wanted something to spark my 6YO son's interest in art. This book sure did. He asked me to read it to him a 2nd time right on the spot. He also spotted a Van Gogh print that I brought home. This is a fine series. I also got the Degas which wasn't quite as interesting but he still liked it. I just ordered Picasso and a few others. Get the Van Gogh and if your child loves it, try some of the others. (I also liked that this mentioned Van Gogh was very depressed once at loving a woman who didn't love him back.)

My five year old was so inspired reading this that she went to the basement and proceeded to make her own copies of his works. It is nice and simple, but with a decent amount of info and great pics.

Her crisp descriptive stories of Muslim women and their families associated with the practice are embedded in a philosophical perspective she identifies as Muslim womanism and in her ethnographic evidence from 2003 to 2013. Readers are introduced to a range of issues that are rich in texture, as they are the basis for examining women’s agency and authority in such marital relationships, religious prescriptions in the Qur’an, legal forms of legitimation for polygyny, Imam Mohammed’s teachings on polygyny, and psychological factors associated with the well being of women and children in multiple-wife marriages.

Throughout the well-crafted six chapters, Majeed stays focused on her intent “to encourage self-examination of Muslim American family life and promote closer attention to the welfare of African American communities, American families, and society as whole” (6). In the Afterword, she also provides practical suggestions that follow up on her intellectual exploration into the lives of her subjects. These suggestions include five recommendations: 1). engage in meaningful dialogue and education about forms of Islamic marriage within the context of the secular United States; 2). require local mosques and Islamic organizations to document marriage registrations; 3). state the relationship a wife envisions in marriage contracts and encourage families to seek advice from knowledgeable and respected community members, marriage therapists, and family law experts; 4). encourage first and potential subsequent wives to communicate with each other prior to any multiple-wife marriage; and 5). remove communal acceptance of marriage ceremonies that take place without a husband’s current wife (or wives) knowledge.

Of particular interest to this reader are the reasons that African American Muslim women enter into polygyny. For some it is a matter of recognizing that multiple-wife marriage is permissible based on the Qur’an and it ensures the survival of family (Sawdah); for some it is a way to be chaste and avoid bad situations (Zuhara); and for some it is a means to avoid unwanted attention and attain security, status, and honor (Lamisha). Significantly, for all the women in Majeed’s fictional performance in chapter two, the method of presentation allows her to use her informants, with whom she had multiple interviews, to discuss issues with each other and to communicate their thoughts about their life circumstances in their own words. In doing so, Majeed ably succeeds in her laudable intent to “link [her] intellectual explorations to practical applications that can benefit communities and subjects [she] stud[ied]” (133). The contributions Polygyny makes to scholarship and to praxis is that it demonstrates an inclusivity that Majeed envisions is needed to open up potential spaces for further examination and development on this topic. So that, while she neither promotes nor condones polygyny, she supports its decriminalization—a book on this topic is what I hope awaits her readers.

Audiences for this text include both readers wanting to understand choices available to African American Muslim women within a polygynist family and readers aspiring to understand with greater depth the historical, religious, and sociological context of this particular marital relationship.
